We were given a diagnosis of HF ASD for DC age 5 just before Christmas. We haven't had the report, and have an OT appointment in a couple of weeks. We were given an information pack containing lots of leaflets, and advised to contact two local support groups and apply to the DLA.
I'm feeling at a bit of a loss, and not sure where on earth to start. I think my main concern is school, and what I need do next.

That's certainly been my experience star. Ds had a statement review (took over a year, but that's another story). While review was taking place his support reduced to zero as he totally masked things, and doesn't cause problems for the school. I was telling them for months of the deterioration in development/behaviour/happiness that was so clear. It was only in the last term that they finally saw for themselves as the strain was too much for him to carry on as normal at school. Lo and behold, they finally agreed to putting concrete hours back in the statement. Same old story - far too easy for schools to dismiss unless it causes problems for them. And they're still trying to wriggle out of it by saying those hours can be used "flexibly". Sigh.

You might get a fantastically supportive school who provide necessary support with no battle, without a statement, but the countless testimonies on this board alone kind of prove this isn't the norm. And Ds's school is supposedly one of the most supportive, inclusive local mainstreaming for ASD.
