car seat for 1 year old unable to sit....suggestions?!

My son has just turned 1 and has infanitle spasms and Williams syndrome, he has low muscle tone and cannot sit unaided yet.

Ive noticed this morning that he is getting too long for his car seat. He is still using the car seat/carrier from his travel system.

Any suggestions as to what car seat I should buy him next that will offer him the kind of support that he needs with his low tone?

I think Britax do a "special needs" car seat - if it reclines that might help with his low tone and its fairly supportive looking in my semieducated eyes. It also swivels to have the seat face out the door to help get in and out without nearly killing yourself - wish they all did it actually!

I'm an OT but have not worked in paeds. Maybe you could ring the child development cntre to speak to an OT.

or try the next stage car seats to see if they recline enough to stop him slipping down the seat.

Hope someone can help you - dont let health and social services fob you off - you and your DS need help to maintain your social and domestic activity and being housebound because of lack of suitable seating is not acceptable.

I've got a maxi cosi that reclines loads - its in halfords if you need to try it out

Mavis should be able to advise and do an assessment if required.

Hi lourobert - not sure where you're based, but there is an excellent car-fitting place in Milton Keynes (recommended to me by lou33 on here in fact). We had the same problem with dd. The MK centre stocks Britax seats that can be rear facing from 9mths - 3yrs. They can then be turned around to be forward facing from 3 - 6 years.
