After just 2 days in his new school his teacher wants to 'start the assessmnet process' off!!!!

She says she has observed hiim and agrees with all i've told her!

So far she says he is

inflexible- black&white thinking

literal

stims

poor comprehension skills

though very able with some maths- struggles with 'complex worded questions' which require following a text including numbers.

balance and spacial awareness probs

tracking-white board to book- loses place

no empathy

NO THEORY OF MIND!!!

thats the bits i remember!

she is so easy to talk to- and she said it was a pleasant change for her to not have to 'brek the news' to an unsuspecting parent. in our case due to our previous chats she is happy to push forward now- rather than wait as she thinks he will need extra support in year 3.

she is familiar with lots of SN- and named asperger's ,dyspraxia and pragmatics.....

YOu all know i have been waiting for THIS day!!!!

I have not found anything i dont like yet at this school!

Yesterday (as i expected...day 2) Alex clung to my leg as i left crying....so today i promised i'd do' blowing bubbles' at bathtime- and it worked!
He went straigh in.

Thomas has been given a 2 week timetable for lessons- so i have LAMINATED IT!!!!
Also today him and the other new boy were given buddies- and this has been done brilliantly as thomas is a bit touch about being 'followed' as he sees it! the buddy actually asks where tom wants to sit and gets him talking about 'stuff'...best bit thomas says there are girls that say they like him as he has a wicked sense of humour!at the old school they all said "EeeeYUCK" when he sat too close!

and finally i am not binge-eating at the moment-sticking to eating 3 or 4 meals and hardly any chocolate.....so if i lose weight....then that would be a brilliant bonus!

Oh MrsF!

How many times have you pinched yourself to make sure this last week hasn't been just a wonderful dream? I'm sooooo pleased for you!

Never mind cutting out food, I think you've probably burned up a few thousand calories just jumping for joy!!

lars · 28/04/2004 20:56

Mrsforgetful thats really good news. This school sounds great and at least they are listening to you. Which I feel is very important and Thomas sounds great he would get on with my ds no end full of humour is not the word.
Keep us posted larsxx

mrsforgetful · 28/04/2004 20:56

cany anyone think of a less messy way of 'rubbling his last teacher's nose in it" as at the moment all i'd like to do is say ''TOLD YA SO!!"

Mrs F, I haven't been following this particularly closely but it's wonderful to hear how happy you are and how good this school is.

(Pity they can't all be like this but at least it makes us appreciate the ones that are!)

mrsforgetful · 28/04/2004 21:00

lars- if i say to tomas...."have i told you that dad's gone out?'...he then says "you just did"....and laughs for ages!he also can mimick tv characters...and loves an audience- yet he was the lone figure on the bench for so long....hopefully cos no one knows him they are not judging him- and see him as a funny lad

MrsF - this is such fantastic news! You have waited so long for this and finally the process is beginning!!

Good luck!

kizzie · 28/04/2004 21:24

This is such great news. Im so pleased for you - the new teacher sounds fantastic. As you know - i'm just at the stage of 'wondering' if something is wrong but Ive been following your whole school saga.
The bit about the buddy scheme is wonderful - the fact that they are working round Thomas and making sure he feels comfortable with it all.
