How do I get DD to dip spoon in food2

Hi all,

Back once again looking for advice.

Our DD has global development delay and is coming up to 2 years. For about 6 months she has been willing to take a loaded spoon off the high chair tray, or out of a bowl that it is dipped in, and then put it in her mouth.

She is very sensitive to other's touch and if you try to put one hand over hers, she will immediately drop the spoon.

Also, if we leave a plate of food on the tray she will either drop the spoon and then use her hands with the food, or push the plate off the tray!!

Has anyone any advice on how to get her to stick the spoon back in the plate of food after she has eaten what is on it?

I am not an expert but I would work on her touch sensitivity away from the spoon first.

Do lots of firm pressure holding and maybe stroking with different textured items to increase her tolerance of it. When she is happier letting you touch her away from the spoon she might tolerate you scooping hand over hand!

Remember that the light touch receptors are the same as the pain receptors and people with sensory processing issues can get easily confused, try using firm pressure when working with her hands and see if she tolerates that better.

Good luck Flowers
