Hi

My son is in Y2, high functioning, ASD+ADHD. He goes to a lovely private school atm, unfortunately we need to move.
He is very bright in academics, Struggles with poor social and language skills, also has sensory issues.

He has statement, should cover 20hrs a week atleast.

We are looking a school with good strategies for social skills development and true inclusive environment in Bromley area.

I plan to visit some of the schools around Petts Wood/Farnborough, wondering there are any recommendations for schools in Bromley council who are doing good work with ASD children.

Thanks

Does your statement include specific SALT provisions for social and language skills?

I haven't heard of Bromley LA being particularly good or bad for kids with ASD, but I have a recollection that some parents have had to fight to get SALT eg small group social skills classes etc put into the statement.

The problem was a statement saying 'access to regular small group social skills classes' which is a far cry from 'weekly small group social skills classes for at least 35 minutes, planned and monitored by a qualified occupational therapist, and delivered by a learning support assistant trained by the qualified occupational therapist'.

The LA preferred the first sentence which of course could mean that the amount of therapy provided could by adjusted to fit the budget - 'regular' could be annual and still comply with the wording.

Can't recall exactly if this was Bromley as it is such a frequent LA trick to avoid paying that it has happened in quite a few LAs.

One to watch out for, anyway.

Hi Senvet, thanks for the heads up. Yes, he does have weekly SALT on his statement.
