Potty training a child with Global Developmental Delays

My child is nearly 5 and shown no sign of readiness for the toilet. He is quite content in sitting in a soiled nappy and never tells me when he has been. I have started potty training and am currently on day 2. He has had several accidents and no successes on the toilet. He is reluctant to wear pants and to sit on the toilet. I have watched him when he does wee and he seem oblivious. He just sits there and carries on doing whatever he is playing with. He fully understands what a toilet is and used for. He can pull down his pants and sit on there unaided, but wont. Do we pursaveer hoping he will crack it? How long do you wait otherwise?

I have a 5 year old with gdd who is not potty trained and shows no interest in it, though he is different from your child in that he refuses to sit on the potty/toilet. The cerebra guidance looks good and I'm intrigued with the pant alarms! Absolutely no advice to offer just wondered how you feel about making the decision to potty train. With my eldest non sn child I didn't do anything, he just did it when he was ready. I'm torn between just letting him do it in his own time or being more proactive. Thoroughly unhelpful answer to your question just wondering what another person in a similar situation thinks.

I would honestly hold off and review in a few months. What you need is for him to be developmentally ready and willing. It's easier to teach the skills he needs for readiness when the weather's a bit more conducive to light clothing and lots of laundry and carpet washing than it currently is.

I have a 5.5 yr old with severe developmental delays. If you search for threads by my name you will see a million of them. I started the process when she was 3yr3mths old. She is still not trained during sleep time(I think her body just isn't ready - 5 yr olds don't wee so much in their sleep as she does. Have had some medical testing done as well).

During the daytime, I kept at it. She still has accidents, mostly because she is too busy doing what she is doing. Sometimes its my fault, I react too much and she does it more to get that reaction.. Bad ABA technique

However, the rest, was all done through ABA. We ran a program and everyone just kept at it. I will try and dig my old threads. the tips I got here were so valuable.
