Non verbal ds now has 8 words!

My ds is 3 and I thought this day would never come. He is almost saying a new word every day!

The words are not perfect but I understand him. He tends to leave the first letters off, so snack is ack, lego is ego, hat is at etc.

He can also spell his name with foam letters in the bath however recently he will only spell it backwards. So just say his name is george, he spells it egroeg.

Can anyone shed any light on why he might do this until I speak to his Speech and language therapist.

It's great that your DS is starting to talk . Mine was 3 when he started to acquire more language. My DS is just 6 now and he still pronounces some words without their first letters (eg 'igestive instead of digestive). However, although he can't really write (has ASD and severe dyspraxia), when he does try, he spells backwards and with mirror writing. To me, it just shows how his perception is really off kilter. I've also noticed, that when he asked to point to a word in book, he is always about two inches to the right of the word he thinks he's pointing at. He has excellent eyesight and hearing but OT found major proprioception difficulties.

My youngest is very slow verbally too she has a few words at 2.6yo but every word is lovely to hear...Our best word is 'No'

2 of my Dd's are lefties and they used to mirror write alot when the were younger, Dd3 still writes numbers the wrong way round occasionally so 27 become 72.

I found by watching them closely that it depended where they started writing so if they started on the right of the paper they would write backwards and if on the left forwards.

I guess the same could be true with the foamy letters, if he picks up the "e" first he will us it first.

I agree with the poster who said that their peception is out of kilter, it makes no differences to my lefty ASD girls if something is backwards or forwards, they still read it and they know what they mean.

Thanks everyone. and yes I agreebabies No is our favourite word too but it is 'o' with a head shake, makes me smile every time.

DS2 was 4 before he had any words... but gathered pace reasonably well and was sort of understandable by 6 (very slurred speech too) much better by 8 and now as a teenager he never shuts up ! I do remind myself to be grateful now and again

My ASD ds was 3 in October (I think I chatted to you about him under a different name) and he's also just started rolling that snowball of speech. Oh my goodness, his sweet little voice!

It's gorgeous isn't it!?! It feels like forever waiting to hear them, but I'm also aware in the grand scheme of things it's not that long, but it felt like it!

ds shocked dh at the weekend because we've been asking him loads of things as he'll answer yes or no about 95% of the time now and so he asked him if he loved mum (he calls us mum & dad because of some tv he watched!) and ds said "I love Mum.... and I love " Dh nearly fell over!

No idea about the letter thing though.

I know old, I thought it would never happen, we are now up to 12 words and four makaton signs! He is delighted with himself.

He is spelling his name forwards again now, must of just been curiosity and me over analysing. I think he liked my reaction. He often puts things in the wrong place, puzzle pieces etc and then looks at me for my reaction and laughs.
