How do I teach her anything?

I am at the end of my tether. 5 yr old. Severe asd. Non verbal. And I just don't know what to teach her academically. She just doesn't get it. She can't recognise alphabets, can't count, can't trace...

I just don't know if it's low IQ or she just isn't ready. She can match. So when I put two dots in front of her why can't she put two beads on it and stop. She keeps adding more to it. I thought that will help her understand the concept of counting. But nah! Her dumbness beats me. I have tried reinforcing it. In a have tried making it a short activity. Pairing with songs.

How on earth do these 'low functioning' kids ever learn any basic maths and reading?

Looking at them now. They are ££ so I want to try them first.

The one with Becca Bunny is quite advanced for us. Are they others the same level too?

Is this app any good for you? My dd liked it. If she can already sort by colour, I think if I remember correctly, it counts them as you put candy in correct jar?

Oso - we have candy count. She can sort. She does the count bit too. But that is what I was trying to build on. Place object on X dots. She can't do that

Does she recognise numbers? Dd can match the number 3 to 3 dots for example as she knows what 3 looks like in dots but if there were 7 or 8 she wouldn't stop and count them she would just guess. I have little cards with numbers 1-10 and other cards with red dots 1-10 and get her to match these but with the higher numbers I (hand over hand) help her count the, say 8, then we match. She doesn't count them independently yet but I'm sure she will soon. maybe this would help her understand the concept of dots/ numbers by using her matching skills with simple ones first? I'm not sure dd would get this game with objects unless they were very simple identical counters or something.

I've just downloaded the Montessori intro to maths app after reading zzz's post and there is a good task matching counters to the number, and demonstrating it first. And you can't keep putting counters down once you reach the correct amount.

Zzzz I couldn't believe it earlier, I showed dd the app and after saying earlier she wouldn't count out independently she actually did count up to 8 in one of the games with no help fro me! Grin

Oso - no she does not know that o o = 2 and o o o = 3

She would match 3 to 3 and o o o to o o o

BUT, I am simply expecting her to put a car(or a bobble(which she loves) or a bead) each on o & o adn the STOP. Will try using 'STOP' and physically stopping her from putting any more and then reinforcing

zzzzz - You are probably right - 'their' messed up brains dont learn like NT kids

I will keep trying

Just last night she traced 4 using icrayon on the "collect fireflys" app. She doesnt care for the fireflys but I think because she was going to get 'free i-pad time' after she traces and that was enough
