Reading my sons medical records via FOI request

Glad I asked for them now. Got a few emails which could be inferred that I'm a bit of a nut lol!

Very interesting that the old school senco said she fully supported me - as that's NOT what she told nhs slt! It's all down in black and white

And my son had a pre school cleft when he 1 month away from going into year one! How the hell are you a preschooler when youve already been at school for a whole year?

I hope this last point will help his statement process

Ouch. I remember getting my records. You do need them to see the clear picture but it can be really unpleasant reading them.

Be kind to yourself and try not to get angry.

TheCheckerdyHorse · 21/06/2014 23:59

I have wondered whether to try to get inaccuracies in my dc's records corrected.

StarlightMcKenzie · 22/06/2014 00:03

That's a job I have pending. I think you need to ask yourself if it would be fair or okay if the information that requires correction is read by your child in the future as being unchallenged and therefore assumed to be true by them.

If you need them to see your side or the implication that the professionals had made a mistake or were incompetent then you need to make sure that even if the information isn't changed, your letter is included besides it.

Your child will be entitled to see those records when they are old enough after all.

2boysnamedR · 22/06/2014 10:30

Tbh I'm not upset by any of it. i think their emails are far more professional than I would be in the circumstances. Also they told his slt off for telling me there's no budget to continue with his care. It's really her fault if that's the truth or her fault if if she's told to do pre school celfs on school age children.

It says a year ago he should be reffered onto school slt but its still not happened.

I'm angry with the system, not any individual as I think it's just misguided rather that malicious

I never did the medical records FOI but did for the LA file - likened it to opening pandoras box and lots of deep buried secrets all came out and I was upset but then it all made sense to some events that had happened in the past. I looked at them, took the information I needed and then put it all back in the enveloped. some of it is hard to read but then at least now you now the true story which can be extremely useful as you move forward

lougle · 22/06/2014 11:25

They do preschool CELF if they think there is developmental delay, I think.

DD1 had preschool CELF in year 2!

I'm not going to try and see DD's records. I can only think that my self esteem as their mother would be damaged if I was able to read their opinions of me and tbh, they're all irrelevant.

I have the lea one here but it's not been touched yet. I think these things can knock you back but if I try to laugh it off its doable.

There is nothing that could break me now. I was wondering two weeks back what it would take to me break down. I can honestly say nothing could. I have been punched in the guts so many times I can't register the pain anymore.

Yes I'm still hurting and I always will. I will always cry at bad news but I won't ever stop until our journey is done. Where ever we have to end up even when I really don't want to do any of this. I'd rather pluck my eyes out the sockets with cocktail sticks then go to tribunal and deal with the school but its not my choice to make. I owe my son all I have to offer. Even though we might well loose. Maybe one day I will look back and laugh but I doubt it.

Thanks for those thoughts, Starlight. I've engraved "Be kind to yourself and try not to get angry" on my heart.

2boysnamedR · 22/06/2014 22:59

Just read his lea record which they haven't done in any order so a page of a email is the back of a IEP and it's all mixed up and not in date order. Everything has been copied at least five times.

Most interesting are the notes from the panel. "Academically levels not provided by the school so unsure if he meets statement criteria there issue a nil'

Also 'no ep involvement, ( yes indeed as lea wouldn't assess him!) speech and language is age appropriate' I sent them I private report showing he is in the bottom 1%!

These wankers don't even bother to read their evidence or chase results from the school!

How dare they arseholes! This is a kids future and it's it's their job yet they can't be arsed.

Still laughing - but at the fact I'm up against a bunch of civil servant morons

I am looking for the report that say " we flipped a coin and it was heads therefore we said let's issue a nil"

I think you do build up an inner strength - have to say that throughout both my tribunals I didn't cry once which is very unlike me. I think you just go onto autopilot and get on with it - the tears and doubts can come after the job has been done. during the last tribunal I would play 'titanium' in the car - came my mum warrior song!!!! would sing it on the way to pick her up from school! we also used to listen to 'hall of fame' straight after the hearing finished I walked into Debenhams and the song was playing so took it as a really good sign

2boysnamedR · 23/06/2014 06:33

When do you hear about your sa result bjk? Been wondering how your getting on?

I finally got my DPA request in two batches - both after the deadline. It is also not complete as I know things that should be in there aren't included (things from me for a start!). Also had to laugh at how they have carefully 'redacted' (ie. blacked out) all the names of all the professionals involved. As if I don't know who his salt, paed, EP, OT are!

marshmallowSqueeze · 23/06/2014 14:30

I tried this with ds records the amount of stuff missing made the whole thing pointless although sadly it is these reports they are still using to hang us even now Sad

2boysnamedR · 23/06/2014 14:43

Mine was quite useful really. In so much as it shows how incompident they are lol! Both resonses for refusal are there and the ep raw scores which I think show he didn't do his job properly.

Bad day here. Wondering if might be better just doing myself in.

Wine and Cake for 2boys

Hope your day picked up.

2boysnamedR · 23/06/2014 20:09

It's just one of those really crap days where everything that could wrong did. On the plus side it looks like my ep agrees with me
