Private Ed psych assessment for tribunal after LEA assessment

Ds was assessed in feb by the LEA using WISC now I'm having trouble as any private ed psych can use this method.

What now?

they can use other test such as the WIAT - there are ways around it. my LA EP isn't assessing my daughter so im 'lucky' in the sense that if they do now issue a NIL then I will have free reign over which assessments can be used. did the LA EP do the full WISC or just parts ?

there are different assessments that EPs can use. my indie EP had to change tests at the last minute as the LA EP had already used the one she was intending to use.
Ask the LA EP to either disclose to you or liase directly with your indie regarding assessments carried out.
indie's are usually good at knowing which tests will demonstrate difficulties and highlight a problem.

No it wasn't a full one. Literacy wasn't assessed but identified as a major concern in the summary at the start. Had one ed psych say he agrees with the nil on the basis of the paperwork and another say his ed psych, salt, and LLS reports don't add up.

I still want to go to tribunal, the ed psych scored him adverage / high adverage yet he is 1% on two other reports in two areas and on school action plus. How can he possibly be high adverage and in the bottom 1%? He is either quite bright or functioning at a low level. Unless he is Jekyll and Hyde?

Have you talked directly to an indie EP? Can they give any help?

I've just looked through my indie EP reports and over a twelve month period, they used

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children: 4th Edition (WISC-IV UK)
  • WIAT-II
  • Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP)
  • Wechsler Objective Reading Dimensions (WORD) Reading Comprehension

By the time we got to Tribunal, the LA EP couldn't do an assessment because he'd been over-assessed. So she had to resort talking to my indie EP, who shared her test results, and then the LA EP could only observe my DS.

There are things a good EP can do.

I have emailed a few and talked to one on the phone. A few are available to asses but some won't do tribunals, some want to go ahead without talking on the phone first, some say leas don't get these things wrong and some aren't convinced they can win for us. Leaves a us a handful worth spending out on.

The best one wants me to talk it out with lea and their ed psych but I'm beyond that now. I don't trust them to be independant from the lea. Beside I have a date so why waste it? Need to phone some more tomorrow then look for them on the net to see if they have any poo reviews.

One was based 200 miles away and the head of his lea so sounded too good.

It's easy to loose faith at the drop of hat. I hope I make the right choice

Another worry is the ed psych from lea going back in assessing him. I might have to tell the school no. Plus the new senco might refuse a indi to go in.

hmm I would be weary of using an EP that was head of a LEA.
what you really need to look for is a totally independent EP, who is registered as a chartered psychologist. Im not sure where in the UK you are but I can recomended 2 EPs that I have used and both have been exceptionally professional and recommended by my solicitor. Pm me if you want their details.

Get the ep to use BAS III. It is an IQ test, the others quoted are attainment tests. The Ep will know this. If they don't-don't use them
