What happens when you get a referral to camhs

My ds has a diagnosis of ads and he is 5 and a half.
I've requested my gp refer us to camhs as I strongly suspect he also has ADHD, and to be honest my pead is rubbish.

She note takes at our meetings and barely looks up, and won't even take us seriously till my ds gets excluded.

I thought with a referral to camhs I might be taken seriously instead of everything being shoved under the diagnosis, but what exactly happens when you get the acceptance that camhs will accept the referral?

It depends on what the referral was for on who you will see. My ds2 had one for poss asd and adhd we had an intinal appointment with a psychologist who explained she would deal with the asd side and assessments and a phychiatrist would deal with the adhd side.

The first few appoinntments we had they spent asking questions getting a picture of ds2 from when i first had concerns and such, as well as talking to him. It was only then they decided which way forward was best for us.

Why do you want the referral. What are you hoping for as the ultimate outcome?

I am hoping my ds will be referred to a psychiatrist who will be able to separate out the asd and possible ADHD.

Okay, but why?

So if it is ADHD we can talk about the possibility of medication.
