Electronic support for MLD teen who struggles to write- what is there to help

Our son is 14, attends a sn school and is barely able to write his short first name. He is very reluctant to attempt to write or draw, having become more so since becoming aware that his writing is thought babyish by his classmates. He is however making some progress learning to read, having just 'got' the basics of phonics at long last! He has difficulties wit's fine motor control along with difficulties that might be similar to more able children with dyslexia. He is also very easily distracted, heavy handed and a constant fiddler.
We are wondering what could help him, to start to write words, sentances and compose when he is so reluctant to use a pencil? Having got school willing to consider using a dedicated electronic keyboard devise - the Alpha smart neo, (still to be ordered) I see these are no longer made. What other options are there out ther? What do others use? I know nothing will happen unless I push and organise it.

My son has an Alpha smart and it helps a lot, its especially good because its so portable and comes with its own backpack!
He sometimes uses a normal computer or an ipad to do written work as well but he has had the alpha smart for 3 years and seems to prefer it.
