Hello
I have come on here hoping for some advice.
I am becoming rather concerned about my 4 year old dd. She has had speech delay in the past amongst other things like biting, scratching tantrums and some tic like behaviours i.e. shoulder shrugging, hand flapping etc, taking shoes of at playgroup. At one point she was under Speech and language and also psychologist, who all thought that she would grow out of it.
Trouble is, she started nursery in September. All was good, she was thriving academically and socially, or so it seemed. Yesterday, the class Teacher pulled me aside and told me that she had been rather reserved. Indeed, I noticed that she was not talking and I found it difficult to leave her as she kept hiding behind me. Throughout the whole time, she did not utter a single word.
I am beginning to get worried, everything is flooding back to me now. As everyone kept reassuring me, I thought it was all in my head, but it seems my daughter is having problems socialising with others, extreme social anxiety.
On the plus side, she is very bright, she is a good artist, learning her letters, numbers at a steady pace. She still scratches and hits her 2 year old brother and behaviour at home can be challenging and she needs guidance and sometimes needs distraction to avoid further tantrums. She still has sensory issues i.e. does not like anyone invading her personal space, will take off coat in car even for a 5 minute journey
She has an 11 year old brother with Aspergers, and some of the behavioural problems are rather similar to that of my ds when he was of her age. I am sure I have missed out some other things about her as my head is full of worry right now. I really don't know whether I should wait or ask for intervention from the school. As a mother, my instincts tell me (as they did with my son who was eventually diagnosed with Aspergers), that something is not quite right.
IS it too early to ask the school for help or should just wait and see?
Sorry for the long post.
