Autism and inhibited Oxytocin during birth

As some of you know I feel strongly that my treatment during my ds' birth which left me with PTSD after screaming for hours and having had a SHO jumping on my abdomen to blast ds out, is responsible for his ASD.

I have always suspected that treatment during the birthing process can encourage or inhibit oxytocin which is a key hormone in birth but also social interaction.

This article is interesting to me and wondered what you thought.

Yes I read this too but due to my collapse and blood transfusion during my first birth I was given oxytocin drip for my second and ds has ASD dx. So I don't think this fits for us?

Doesn't fit for me - had a beautiful (still bloody painful) birth in a birthing pool at home and felt really supported and in control. In contrast first labour with DS (NT) was hell in a hospital where I felt totally disempowered.

It is interesting. I have a mate digging me out the iriginal research (academic).

D2s birth was odd. Few hours of latent phase followed by 20 minutes of proper labour, one push and that was it.

One of mine was a long, drawn out induction, ending up with a forceps delivery. Managed very gently but far from relaxed. The other was a precipitate birth. Easy peasy, but definitely not relaxed! 100% hit rate.

Had a horrendous birth with dD too with lots of intervention and injections of syntocin.

Have wondered if I had PTSD afterwards too..and think I probably have because I went for unrelated medical procedure today and felt really teary and upset as soon as I lay on table.

Ds was approximately 4 hours only gas and air . Dd2 16 hours she was in an awkward position when she was born she had passed meconi um and had a huge lump on her head . Wish I had pushed for a section

Excuse my ignorance but what is PTSD?

DS was EMCS birth. Long labour, waters broke, didn't dilate, he moved up again and I wanted to push - so did my body if the monitor was correct.

We thought the same with Ds3 whose 25 months awful Labour and delivery had an emergency c section we are both lucky to be here and we have recently had a meeting with the hospital about the whole event. He's non verbal and has just been referred to our Child Development Center.
Dd2 birth was better just got a bit stuck but she's also has been referred for autistic behaviours last August

Standard 'difficult' birth with DS, long, epidural & ventouse. He had passed meconium & needed a brief stint on the resuscitaire to start crying.

I always get asked how his birth was.

I had group B strep during my pregnancy with ds so as soon as my waters broke they had to induce me to get the labour going b4 the infection reached ds and caused potential illnesses and they had to treat this with antibiotics so I had lots of different interventions going on what with the antibiotics, induction and pethidine as it was such a long drawn out labour and then to finish up... Forceps. 2 weeks early. I do often wonder if all of this together triggered something. I guess I will never know

Planned section. All very straight forward. Dts1 (ASD) was out first, dts2 out less than 30 seconds later...

Both my quirky girls were tricky deliveries, one feet first breech and one back to back. Dd1 probably caused me PTSD. Horrible horrible delivery.
Dd3 not quite so bad but midwife was shouting at one point when she realised Dd3 was stuck and she yelled "You need to push this baby out now!!"

I have told a tonne of proffs over the years, 2 quirky girls, 2 horrid deliveries both lefties. 1 NT girl , easy water birth and a righty!!

I had a less than ideal delivery - 29 hours of labour, didn't dilate, emergency c section, DS had passed meconium.

But DH, FIL, my mother and I all show pronounced ASD traits, so I think there's more likely a genetic cause in my DS's case.

Had an ELCS with ds2. I sometimes wonder if his cord being cut right away contributed to his autism. He was "different" from days if not hours old. His cord stump also dropped off after two days, usually takes longer, he has extremely deep belly button.

Genetic in our family, it couldn't be any clearer, DS was an easy, text book birth

So is there delivery fuelled oxytocin produced in c section? There can't be, can there?

Ds1 was the most straightforward pregnancy and birth out of my 3. Had a lot of panic and intervention with dd's birth and she's NT

My aspie DS was ventouse after induced labour (so lots of oxytocin? not sure) and his aspergerish but as yet undiagnosed younger bro was also augmented labour. Two other quirky but NT kids both not augmented labour. I always thought it was the other way round - that the need for intervention was because they were aspie (and so not following expected pathways even then!), rather than that they were aspie because they needed intervention. Clear genetic links in my family too.

1 x traumatic birth, resulting in baby getting stuck (shoulder dystocia) ending in us both nearly dying i haemorraged and he was left with erbs palsy
1 x easy birth, he slipped right out

2 x children with autism.

we're all always desperate for a reason, but in all honesty, I think it is genetic.

I believe it's genetic I know one family isn't evidence but dd1 is nt and she has a different father to ds and dd2 who have autism

It CAN be genetic I think. Not always..it isn't with us or other families I know.
