Our ms is really struggling with this and any attempt to get him to sit down and eat/do work time is met with pinching. Ds has asd and largely non verbal bar one words for objects.
His ta is looking to me for ideas and I know we are only on week 2 of the new school but I'm constantly racking my brains...now he's flicking the light switches at school and she asks me if he does this at home. Short answer, yes he does but one stern look and a few choice words and he will stop.
I'm going to suggest an aba style approach with a DVD player and a favourite DVD with a sand timer.
Anyone else got any other ideas? Will my ds just get bored of messing around and actually sit for work time? He used to do this but in the last 3 months has totally stopped (coincided with nativity rehearsals which he didn't do and a change of school and ta).
My gut instinct tells me he's trying it on a little bit because he does these things at home, OT wise we're doing the right things, I would just like to hear from other mums if their 5yr old child with asd was difficult to sit down and focus for any length of time. The thing is I know- and the salt knows he can do these things, just at the moment he's choosing not to so its a question of won't rather then can't.
