UK Boarding School for Bright ADHD?

Hello,

We are British expats... Looking for a UK boarding school for our son in a couple of years time when he reaches secondary school age.

And would welcome any recommendations.

He is very bright (measured high iq) and has an Ed Psych and Pediatrician diagnosis of combined type ADHD. He also had an Auditory Processing Disorder.

He is verbally very articulate and reads a lot but due to poor fine motor skills his handwriting is slowing him down. There is a large gap between his potential and his current achievement.

He had no aggression or conduct issues, but is hyperactive and impulsive. Struggling to sit still and not shout out the answers in class are issues for him.

He will be staring medication for the ADHD soon (hospital appointment next week).

We are trying to find either a mainstream boarding school with a track record for supporting children with similar profiles or a specialist boarding school.

I would prefer a school with a prep and senior section so that he can join at 11 and stay at the same school until 18.

We have a preference for Southern England/South East England with easy access to Heathrow or Gatwick.

So far I have pinpointed More House in Surrey as a possible but as he is not dyslexic am not sure of his chances of getting a place.

Any views on More House or other boarding schools would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

* my other concern/question is, even though private, do the children have to have a EHA (statemented) to be accepted at schools such as more house? As my son is diagnosed but considered by previous school on uk not to require an EHA although we disagree (with regard to social and communication etc)

Hello there,
I've just joined Mumsnet as I needed advice and help in looking for a boarding school for our 12 year old boy with ADHD and severe allergies. He's been in an International school all his life, but we aren't happy with our current school in Spain and want to look into the possibility of a boarding school in the UK. Unfortunately most have a UK curriculum and we are concerned that the academic level may be much higher. Any suggestions for a UK boarding school in the UK that also has Learning support as well as an IB programme? I have contacted More House which stands out among all the others and waiting to hear from them. Any advice or information from anyone out there is most welcome.

Hi,

My son, 13 has ADHD and although he is in a school for additional needs, he has made a disastrous friendship with a boy who is always disrupting the class. We are keen to attempt the boarding school route. Just wanted to catch up with Expatmomma and ask how has More House been? My son is taking 45mg Concerta at the moment.

Hi, also going through application process at More house at the moment and wanted to get in touch with someone who is still at the school ?

Hello,
I am the aunt of a teenage boy who was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder).
He is a very bright boy with a lot of potential.
I am helping my sister find a school that will suit his needs.
We got in touch with Bredon School, which we like a lot, but unfortunately, they are not sure they can accept him because of his ODD.
Could you please advise any school which deals with behavioural disorders?
While we have seen a few options, they seem to be too extreme compared to the needs of my nephew.
He also suffers from dyslexia, but he has mostly learnt how to deal with this due to the fact that he has been diagnosed only recently.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello,
Seems like there is this horrible hole that these kids fall down - not quite what mainstream schools want and are willing to manage and not qualifying for special needs schools either. My son is 13 and has fallen down the cracks - Mainstream has left him strung out, anxious and depressed and has exasperated his ADHD. Yet he is too high functioning for special needs schools. He has been in the international system in Asia, and they can be pretty choosy about who they have to keep their academic record looking pristine. So we are now looking at boarding schools in Australia, NZ and the UK (inc. More House) but also would prefer to keep him and his younger brother (no issues) together. Any other schools anyone has come across that accept neurotypicals as well as giving that little bit of extra support?? :)

Hi there

I wondered if you ever found somewhere suitable for your son?

tankez · 08/03/2021 07:41

Hi Expatt Mom or any other moms on this chat.

I am considering taking my son to More House. How has your experience been. He has the same issues that you describe.

I am considering he joins in September 2021 year 8.

AspergersMum · 12/03/2021 10:15

Hi tankez. We too considered More House but it was felt that his needs would be too high for him to cope in the environment (he would likely need a TA in the classroom or ideally a one-to-one). Such a shame as it seems that many boys have had great experiences there.

Wibble5 · 06/07/2022 21:11

Mrschubby01 If you ever look back at this thread I’d be really interested to hear how you got on with your son as a day student at More House. My son sounds very similar to yours - adopted & ADHD & im considering a move if it would help with his self esteem.

strawberrylacey · 06/07/2022 22:31

Why can't he go to a local school with support? Why boarding?

Jazzappledelish · 22/06/2023 17:23

Op I would love to know how your son got on and if you recommend boarding and ADHD?
