Please tell me an Innotab 3S for my 4.5 yr old with ASD is a good gift!

My very generous MIL has bought our son aged 4.5 with ASD an innotab 3S for Christmas. I know this is an expensive gift.
I have just registered it but cannot find/or don't know where to begin to find suitable apps for him (I dont think she realised how expensive all the downloads are either). Any ideas? I think she thought we could download our own dvds etc onto it.
All the apps seem to be learning specific for NT kids - don't know where to begin and quite frankly working myself into a bit of irrational upset and despair at the whole thing.

I really want to think it is a good present but I'm not sure what he is going to do with it. He is non verbal and only just starting to use PECs as a method of communication.

My sister gave us her ipad for him last year (again very generous) and he plays some cbeebies games on that and watches stuff from Lovefilm. I have tried some ASD relevant apps with him - but again not very interested.

Any pointers in the right directly greatly appreciated!!

I just wish MIL consulted us before buying as I would have done loads of research beforehand but I think she just bought it without checking anything :( She is not remotely tech literate.

is this a tablet? run on android? sorry, never heard of the innotab.Blush

tbh, if you want to use apps and you already have an ipad, then there are loads of apps via istore available. a lot of them also free. I cannot image an innotab can beat that.

any specific area for which you would like to use apps?

will have a look what we have on our ipad (currentl Dds are on it).

My mum bought my ds an innotab for his 4th birthday which was just over a year ago. My mum registered it and downloaded a couple of things which was great. Since then I have bought a couple of games for it from tesco. They just slot in the side which is easy. Can you do this with yours? I havent bought any more because they are quite expensive and not really worth it for the amount of time ds uses it.

He has had fun using the camera on it and occasionally plays the games. But it has not been the big hit my mum was hoping for. I think my ds much prefers playing with my mums ipad.

I have found it useful to take out to restaurants and on holiday. I bought the toy story game and scooby doo game. My ds likes the pizza making game on the scooby doo one and a balancing game which was downloaded. Hopefully someone will some along with some good advice for you.
