Can anyone recommend a book that may help me with this? My ds is five and has a diagnosis of high functioning autism. He can be very upset if we are playing and I pretend to be someone else. He crys and says he wants his mummy back. Ds hit a girl at school recently when she was pretending to be a school teacher. Ds has never hit anyone before.

Today we went to see a panto and he freaked out when the bad guy came into the audience and was near him. At bed time we had a chat and he explained to me that he does not understand what pretend is and he does get very scared and upset. It is great that he is starting to discuss his feelings with me. How do I help him with this? I spoke to the Ed Psych about this but she offered no advice. She did say it could be connected to his poor facial recognition.

I feel a bit sad about it
