Stars in the Skies is a North London dating agency for people with learning disabilities. Suzanne Lynch's tender, often funny film follows several clients as they try to find company, friendship and possibly love. The beauty of the programme is the scenes it brings us of romance reduced to its innocent essentials. The daters have a directness that most couples wouldn't attempt. When Apu and Tamanna meet at a coffee shop for their awkward first date, she soon cuts to the chase with "are you enjoying the date?" to which Apu responds, "Yeah, I'm enjoying it." "Mmm, so am I," she says. The debate about whether people with learning disabilities have the same rights to love and sex as anyone else is barely touched on, but it doesn't need to be: the whole programme is a resounding "yes".

Thomcat · 13/07/2006 21:26

Not too far in at all.

Proper heaving sobs from the Thomcat thought - just to warn you.

SherlockLGJ · 13/07/2006 21:26

SherlockLGJ · 13/07/2006 21:26

SherlockLGJ · 13/07/2006 21:47

Not the film, but so much better.

Another one crying, my good school gate friend has a DS little lad. He is lovely, he and I have a great bond, because (according to his Mum) I don't crowd him, or fuss him.

SherlockLGJ · 13/07/2006 22:01

That was great, are you OK TC ?

RTKangaMummy · 13/07/2006 22:01

don't usually pop into sn threads but wanted to see if you were watching.

it was great to see the agency in action - theres a few others dotted around the country too.

my workplace (lD services)is just about to go live with "mates n dates" - hope it has positive outcomes as well.

SherlockLGJ · 13/07/2006 22:06

It is a fab idea....

hunkermunker · 13/07/2006 22:10

Oh missed this

TC, are you OK, sweet?

fattiemumma · 13/07/2006 22:19

i watched.
i was also blubbing away whilst trying to contain a huge smile.

i was SO proud of Helen (think that was her name) when she told nicky that no she wouldnt sleep with him, she had only just met him and that perhaps she shoudl go now.
if only many NT teenagers could behave with such dignity!

a truely fantastic and optimistic programme.

Very touching programme - well worth watching if it's repeated (it might be shown again on More4 or E4?)

zippitippitoes · 14/07/2006 13:51

very impressed with Nicky getting the brush off so effectively...

a very interesting programme I thought with a nice delicate touch

How did William and Louisa get on after their date at the Italian restaurant?.

Very good programme that. Channel 4 do come up with the goods occasionally particularly with regards to the making of such programmes. They certainly do not always show crapola like BB thankfully.

Reginald · 14/07/2006 14:42

William and Louisa started seeing each other after that (William visited L at her home), but then William's depression got worse again and they broke up
