Can I get a grant to get a new bedroom for my son.

My son needs his own bedroom he has asd and does not sleep - i need somewhere safe for him to be in the night - he currently shares with his older brother who is falling asleep in school because of his disrupted nights. DS2 currently recieves higher rate of dla. Has anyone been able to do this?

what do you mean by a new bedroom - a house extentsion or decoration

I had a very similiar problem,ds1 has sever autism and doesnt sleep well,gets up in the night wakes his brother ,hits him etc they also shared a room.
I have a 3 bedroom house and as well as ds1 and ds2 i have a dd,i ended up giving ds1 the smallest room in the house to himself,divided the biggest room with a huge curtain rail and curtains and shared it with ds2,with dd in the third room.She is only 3 so too little to share a room with myself as she will think shes to sleep in with me!So until ds2 is too old i will share with him ,by then dd will be old enough and we will all swap round again!

Mine is 3 bedroom too but all of the bedrooms are really small so no chance of dividing any of them unfortunately. dd is a baby still and in the smallest then the 2 other bedrooms are the same size - me and dh in one and ds1&2 in the other in bunk beds. not sure about loft conversion but that would involve building out with dormer windows - it is a very low roof, we just couldnt afford it.

could you maybe put the baby in with ds1 and let ds2 have the other room on his own then you can work on it to make it a safe place for him at nights?

Have you tried contacting your local council to apply for a disabled facilities grant. We are currently waiting for them to fit us a bath instead of a shower. Eventually we may try to get one for an extension as we will not be able to carry him upstairs safely when he gets bigger and heavier.

Loobie - I may have to do that but it isnt going to be a long term answer as there is a 6 year age gap.

I posted a while ago that DFG is available to children with disabilities WITHOUT A MEANS TEST. I think it goes up to something like £30,000. It gives the info on that link.
