A report out today, saying that the closure of special schools is a mistake and that decisions on incusion/special schools should be a child centered choice.

About bloody time.

Now let's see if this is follwed by the provision of some money!

This report was begun before we even left England - in fact I went to a consultation meeting with local members etc before I went back to work so it would have been sometime in 2003 I think!!! Finally got the report out. THis is what was being said at the meeting - parents talking about fighting an LEA for 7 years to get a statement or a place at a special school for their son.

Be interesting to read the whole report.

oh good. Dd's SLD/PMLD school is completely oversubscribed due closures of other special schools in the area. There class sizes have doubled and although there are enough staff, it is still a bit worrying. I worry about the kids that should be going to special school aswell but are out at mainstream, struggling

What i would like to see is a proper independant report that shows the advantages of either mainstream or special school to a child with moderate/severe complex learning disabilities to be honest. because at the end of the day this is what it boils down to in my opinion. Inclusion is a fantastic idea. i would love to think my dd could go to mainstream and get a full sensory program, SALT throughout the day, music therapy sessions, clever hands program, daily physio etc....but is that ever going to happen? or is it happening?
