So mad!!! Have I got this wrong? Schools sen policy

Obviously no one on here can answer this but I'm getting evidence for statutory assessment which I applied for. Reading the school sen policy educational phycologist are only called in at statutory assessment! The school have been telling me for nine months they will call in a ed phy for him, but the policy of the school says they don't do this? So either they are going above and beyond the sen policy - or I have been lied too. Should I ask the head tomorrow? If he gets refused this assessment then he will never see a ed phy! How can this be fair?!

No.

Just know that the school are liars and wait until later to address this particular point.

You will have quite enough things to address throughout the SA process.

Record it on your log, put a star by it so you can come back to it at another time (perhaps if you are refused SA).

This won't be the first or last thing like this that you discover on your journey so perhaps use it to practise coping with it.

So he isn't down to see a ed phycologist? I'm emailing the head as we speak. If I find out he wasn't referred I'm going to spit blood as the senco told me in front of dh she had referred him. Feel like telling the school to just on with him if this is case. If this right ( it might not be) I feel like telling to the school to go to hell and they can shut up about him failing blah blah blah as there's nothing I can do. But in reality I will write to the governers. But I am so beyond pissed off and fed up with all this tripe

As a teacher I can tell you that it is not up to the school to arrange an ed psych visit, they can request one, but my experience is that there are so few ed psychs working in state schools that it may be years until you see one or you child has to be exceptionally severe to be seen quickly. As a teacher I have wished that I could have a report on some of the children I teach so as to understand their needs better, but am limited by county resources. It might have been that the school requested a visit but was turned down busy the county.

trinity0097 that is not necessarily true for all schools everywhere.

My DD was seen within months of issues being noted, although the school at the time was only referring her for advice for teachers, not a full assessment. (Of course she didn't last long in post as Ed Psychs seem to move 2 or 3 times as fast as any other position.)

im being told that even though my daughter is 4 years behind the LA EP wont see her unless she is 6 years behind which makes it pretty near impossible for an EP to see a primary child unless of course you have requested a statutory assessment

God that's unbelievable! Six years behind and no help? Well if I get a independent ep the le will ignore their findings. How can I have any way of helping him? I don't do I? Nhs don't want to put his dx in writing and la aren't interested in his schooling. I guess all have is a small glimmer they will do the sa if I appeal

We had an independent EP report done and the LEA did accept his findings, but had the same as as you with Nhs said he would never cope in mainstream, but wouldn't put it in writing! What county are you in?

Well if I get a independent ep the le will ignore their findings

2boys - the school and the LA may try to ignore an indie EP report but if you eventually request/appeal SA then the LA will have to take into account any indie reports you have.

My son's Statement has 4 indie reports attached to it

Before you get too angry bear in mind that the school might have asked for an EP report despite what their policy says. As people have said, it can take ages to get an LA EP in.

In our area the school buys in the EP service and prioritizes which children are to be seen - I think she comes in once or twice a term but the school has over 600 children so there is much competition. Neither of my children have any academic delay but have major social problems and anxiety (10 years, AS). The school were finding them extremely difficult to manage so they got shot up to the top of the list. She saw them again when we requested SA and we got a much more detailed and strategic report then.

Hmmmm....I went via the GP rather than via school ( they said it would be quicker). We went initially about dyspraxia worries and dyslexia. The paed we saw referred us on to various departments, and this also included a school visit from the 'cognition and learning team'. I think this is our LA's version of Ed psych. We were seen within a couple of terms of the initial GP appt. DS is only one year behind average with writing now (at the time his spelling was about 3 yrs behind), but his reading and general IQ is miles ahead, so the gap warranted investigation.

Oh, the GP really sat up and listened when I started talking about low self esteem....I think that prioritised him.

He is under peadiatrics but she has told me she can't call in the ep. I might go down the gp as I'm getting nowhere. If the head gets back to me I will phone the pead for advice

Just ask for a copy of the referral as you are going to use that and the information within it to send to an independent EP.

Senco said she was referring him nine months ago. No news from the head re my email. He's seen it no doubt and trying to cobble a reply to me ( but never in writing lol) yes good idea about the reffaral details for my records. Yes made a private salt appointment to save my sanity. Days like this I hate. I hate having to fight this. Wish things were different. Wish I never knew about sen and my son was another smart arse. I keep hoping it will get better but that's never going to happen

Just back from ot and was told that school have asked ot to write a report for a statement as he needs 1:1. Could take this anyway. Ot thinks they ment it in terms of he needs 1.1 and a statement but that would be a 160 turn from school so I'm not sure. Today is just a day for lots of tears I think. Ot did say the age spelt it out and school seems to get it.

Sorry - ot spelled it out to school ( that he's not naughty, he's just overloaded with sensory stuff) and she said the teacher understood. But she also said that school said he can't be trusted to go off to a quite place to calm down by himself and that he never asks to go to do something quite as its too much - he's five with learning difficulties! I find it hard to recognise stress and I'm 30 something!

schools in our area have to buy in ed psych service now and it's taken 10 months to get one for my ds. Parents need to sign the referral form to give permission for the ed psych to make their assessment etc

Schools have to buy in the Ed Psych service now (and they are given money to do that), and it is up to them how much of the service they buy and also whether or not they buy in 'other' EP services from independent or other providers.

Schools having to buy them in, is not an excuse for a delay. If it is a priority, they will find the money to buy in more.
