Please help me to organise my thoughts and "list" of thing to say and ask for .

I did not want ds to know he was going to be observed but senco told him in front of me....He will know he is being "watched "and so it will not be a natural classroom setting as ds is very good at hiding and covering up things.

The reason I want EP is due to his educational delay/problems.....He is yr 5 but writing and spelling is illegiable and he has to go down to yr2 to get his reading books.

He is a very very quiet passive boy who does not get into or cause trouble...I think he drifts off because everything is so hard for him...

Could say more but don't want to bore you all but ...

How do I condense my points and should I bring someone with me for the meeting to fight my case.

I know it is an initial chat ...but just dont know what it will involve

Thank you

I saw ed psyc last jan, she came out and observed dd in nursery and then asked me to meet her afterwards for a chat. She told me a bit about what she had observed but mostly asked my views/concerns and she also spoke with the nursery manager. She then provided a detailed report on what she had assessed dd on and the outcome.
Write down all your concerns if it helps for you to remember them. The one I saw was very nice and listened to my concerns, it was a relaxed meeting.

Thank you for replying osopecial....did EP do a "proper assessment " at some point ..or was the informal chat enough to get things sorted ?

She did the assessment with dd for about an hour before I got there so that's what most of the report consisted of. Sorry I said she observed dd but she was assessing as well, as much as possible anyway as she noted dd can be quite hard to engage. Our situation was that dd was due to start school but the paediatrician suggested dd would be better in a observation and assessment unit and so ed psyc came out and agreed with this and sent her report to the panel who agreed her place.
She did do recommendations then at the end on what DDs needs were and what her educational targets should be, so make it clear what you think your DS 'barriers to learning' are and what support you think he needs.

Thank you ..."barriers to learning".... ...the classroom !!

The thing you need to know is EPs only look for what you tell them to look for.

So if you want him assessed for dyslexia, ADD and ASD you need to tell her that.

If she's not asked to assess for something she won't do it.

Cheryzan..thank you (and sorry for late reply!)

What you and osospecial have said have really helped....I realise now my thread title did not say I needed advice so thank you both for opening it !!

Cheryzan they are 3 of the things that I want looking into as well as APD and dysgraphia but thought I might come across as a mum desparate for her son to "have" something instead of narrowing down their assessment and findings .

Ds has told me what he thinks would help him in school, so I told him to tell EP if he can ...We are both desparate!

Regardless of any medical term ...he is under achieving by 2/3 years and so would still need some proper imput from school.

Thanks again

All you need to do is list symptoms as well as labels.

  • I'm concerned about possible APD because he....
  • I'm concerned about possible ASD because he....

He won't get all of those labels, (even if he has them) and certainly not from an EP. But it should be fine to mention them all.

He may well have all of those things. That would not be at all unusual. Once you start researching more you'll see how they all fit together and why you can have all of those problems.
