Class trip

Ds is in Year 1. In a few weeks Year 1 and Year 2 are going for a trip to an art gallery approximately 30 miles away. At first the teachers said that he would not be bale to go but they have since changed their minds, saying that he can go as long as I go with him and I drive him there myself. Unfortunately I don't drive and my DH is working so it seems that he will not be able to go. I told the school this today and the headteacher suggested that I could get a taxi there and back to take him and bring him home. When I said that it's quite far to pay for a taxi to do so she said that maybe he could go on the coach with the other children in which case I would have to go with him and be prepared to pay for a taxi home if he "kicks off". I just feel that this is unfair.

DS is also Y1 and we have just started the assessment process for ASD. Generally school have been great but the subject of the class trip came up at our latest meeting with the SENCO & CT. They didn't outright say he couldn't go without a parent present, but they did say they have concerns for his safety as he is prone to bolting when upset, which they can manage in the confines of the school grounds but not out in a public place. They asked if DH or I would be prepared either to join them on the trip, or to go separately to the same place but not actually with them IYSWIM (he would go on the coach with the other children and not even know we were nearby), and be in the vicinity and prepared to rush in and collect him if called.

We said yes, because it happens that this time we can do it without too much inconvenience. But I now wonder if we have set a precedent that they will only ever take him on a school trip if one of us can go, and that might not be an option for us another time!
