DD1 broke her hand -HT concerned about it

DD1 broke a bone in her hand yesterday. Her HT came to me today (I happened to be at her school) and mentioned that the area DD1 fell on is safety surfacing and to have a clean break after a trip on that area isn't expected.

She was wondering if there could be bone density issues? DD1 was on Sodium Valproate for several years but hasn't been for about a year now.

If her bone density was affected by the sodium valproate, the effects are definitely still possible now. However, with that said, unless she has had multiple fractures in areas that "should not" have broken, it almost seems to me like the HT is trying to abdicate the school of responsibility by suggesting that a "normal" child could not have broken themselves in the area that has been deemed safe.

If you are concerned - it might be worth a question or two the next time you are in to see the GP or whatever consultant you see for follow up for the fracture (when DS did the same thing, he was followed by a plastic surgeon). If there was a severe bone density issue, it may well have been mentioned when she was treated yesterday (it would have been visible on xray).

Thanks for that, BeeMom. The HT is definitely not abdicating responsibility. I'm a Governor at the school and she's very hot on Health and Safety - if there was any concern with that she'd have the Education Department on the phone and measures put in place before you know it.

She was just genuinely alarmed that DD1 could have fractured a bone on safety surfacing, particularly as she only tripped on her own feet and only weighs 19kg.

I'll mention it to the fracture clinic when we see them. Hopefully they'll say 'Oh no, terribly common and nothing to worry about.'

She is coping wonderfully and her sling is absolutely covered in stickers from school .

She was hilarious at the hospital; two policemen were there, and she suddenly said 'Hello, Pleeeses!' A very funny exchange followed whereby she quizzed them on whether they only catch 'really meanies' and they asked her to try and get the nurses to give them a sticker .

She was grabbing anyone who vaguely looked in her direction and saying 'I broked my bone', then when the doctor took her round to the plaster room, she grabbed the plaster tech by the hand and said 'I broked my bone. Come look at xray' and dragged her around to the screen, helpfully pointing out that it was her bone .

Even a rubberised surface doesn't completely prevent the risk of broken bones - it's very easy to break bones in hands if you land on them at certain angles.

Sounds like she was an absolute darling at the hospital! :o

She was so brave. They didn't even offer her paracetamol and at least 3 children arrived after her and were seen first with minor injuries.

She had to wait well over 2½ hours to get to the point where an xray was authorised, but once that bit was done the fracture was clearly obvious and she was plastered quite quickly.

She went to school today and came second in her class for the football Kickathon with a speed of 18 miles per hour. That's my girl - you can't keep her down

Oh dear, hope it's just one of those things and nothing more serious.

She's hilarious, really. I think it's because she doesn't even know she's being funny and she has no inhibitions. Everyone is her best friend as soon as she sees them.

Sorry to hear she's broken a bone Lougle. She sounds like such an amazing girl.

Dd broke her arm gently sliding out of the rocking chair onto thick carpet with thick bouncy underlay underneath it. It was the way she landed, rather than the fall/landing, iyswim, so the surface they land on doesn't necessarily make all that much difference.

Sounds like she's taking it in her stride, but hope it heals quickly anyway.
