Speech therapist for teen

Hi all..

Other than Myra and Jackie, does anyone know of any good well respected experienced therapists?? I don't mind which part of the UK they are in, just as long as they know their stuff and work with older children as you'd be surprised at how many that don't..

Could you tell us a little more about the specifics that you require a speech therapists for? Dyspraxia? Language? Social skills? Articulation? I know many good speech therapists across the UK but they are all specialists in different areas.

Hoxton I don't want to hijack (says she blatantly doing so), but speech therapy for my teenager (16) son is something I've been thinking about.

He has AS and though very articulate about most things just cannot express his emotions or emotional type thoughts at all. He also has severe OCD and his language problems are really impeding his progress with CBT. I don't even know if this is something a speech therapist could help with but would be grateful for any advice.

His main areas are receptive and expressive language disorders, secondary to that he has social communication issues. He also displays some autistic traits however I am refusing to go to CAMHS as the person who would asses him has already shown her ignorance before making the appointment and do not need them making my case worse.

I wonder if ICAN could put you in touch with some of the people they've trained to help at secondary level (or even better, the tutors themselves). failing that, perhaps you could book one of their own assessments.

I work with a lot of kids like this (not privately though).
My broad advice would be to veer away from general advice and assessment and focus on specific interventions to meet specific needs.

Try and pinpoint what exactly it is you want him to be able to do better.

He had an Ican assessment last year, so not sure if I can go back as they funded the assessment via their charity fund plus I would ideally need this person to be available for meetings etc..

DS has a statement (for over 8 years now) , what he needs has been identified unfortunately the LEA have decided to not put the provision in place and as they are playing silly buggers, I have got to do whatever I can to at least have some idea as to what is going on with him ready for no doubt what will be another battle.
