what happens in a carers assessment?

I have a carers assessment scheduled next week...tips...what to do, not to do, what to say, not to say...

I did not have one, not sure why not, but a friend did and really it is just to see how much harder your life is than with a NF kid. Be honest, but think of your worst day and night with DD. My pal said it was not nearly as horrible or adversarial as she had feared. You have DLA, right?

I didn't really have a Carers Assesment, as such with DD. In our area, DCT lump the assessment together with an assessment of the child's needs - so you are assessed as a whole family. They seemed to be looking at things like how much help you get from family/friends etc as well as looking at your family situation. ie ages and needs of other children in the family. They then decide whether or not you need any help and what form that help will take.

DD is 18 now, so recently had a separate Carers assessment from Adult Social Care. DD has her respite package, but I was told by a top legal person, that in Adult services, respite is a provision for the disabled person and not the carer. So when I heard nothing about the outcome of my Carers Assessment, foolishly thinking that I would get something just for me I was a little surprised to be told that they had just used it as evidence for DD's Care package.
