Y6 teachers or any Mnetter who knows about SAT access arrangements.

Im a bit premature on this as my son is only at the end of Y3 but he has just moved over full time to using a wordprocessor to write (called a Neo). Will he be able to use this in SATs? Ive heard you have to apply for permission to do anything out of the ordinary years in advance so I dont want to get caught out.
Is there a document or webb site that I can refere to or quote to get him the permission etc?

figleaf - am pretty sure that the school would sort out any special arrangements for their pupils - I teach special needs pupils and they are given extra time, and some of them have special equipment as well. As far as I know, it's the school that does this.
Maybe check with the SENCO at the school? I'm sure they would know

I don't know details anymore as I haven't taught full time for 10 years but I did some part time work 4 years ago with Yr 6 at SATs time and I know several children where I taught had special provision. If your son uses a word processor for his normal work, then I am sure he will be allowed to use it for SATs. Can your school not advise you on this? It should be their job to apply for permission and make the arrangements, not you. Smile

If it's the same as secondary then the school will apply for special arrangements for your son. You don't have to do it. It has to be done months in advance as there may be some assessment required, but not years. Speak to the SENCO.

SENCO is waste of space, doesnt think ds has a problem except laziness<img loading="lazy" class="inline-flex mumsnet-emoji" alt="Angry" src="https://www.mumsnet.com/build/assets/angry-BLHnmhGV.png">. I have mustered a paediatrician,ed.P and Occupational therapist to get him the Neo (which we bought ourselves) but they arent sure what I have to do to ensure he can use it in any SAT.

I think it does have to be the school that applies. You could get in touch with the exam board that administers the SATs. I'll see if I can find a link.

If I were you, and you have tried the SENCO and got nowhere, I would approach the headteacher. The problem here does not seem to be will your son be allowed special provision during the SATs, but is the school recognising his current needs and meeting them.

Thanks becky, I was hoping for somthing quotable - you know the sort of advice that may be sent round to school this time of year explaining how to administer the tests etc. Perhaps I`ll find it on their web site.

His teacher is ok DDG and the head is (sort of) its just the SENCO. WE have IEPs etc but I feel that if I didnt push and monitor like a hawk they would let things slide. Thats why I want to find out whats what way before I need the info.

Agree with Dumbledore's girl. The SATs are in the future. His needs now need to be met. Why is he using the word processor? What does the school say about the prof reports?

DS is Dyspraxic and dyslexic but very bright so "covers" quite well for himself. The OTs say he has poor Bilateral integration and fine motor skills so cant write for more than a few mins at a time without getting knackered. What he writes is really scruffy too. On his Neo he is fine. Ive been taking him out of school one afternoon a week since Christmas to teach him touch typing. He types at 8 - 10 w.p.m now. This is only our 3rd full week on the Neo (as it has taken me 2 yrs to get to this point) but things are definately looking up I think.
Just want to be prepared for the SECCO`s inefficiency in the future.

Celia, The Ed.P and OT have asked for the use of the Neo to be put in his new IEP. This should have started after Easter but I havent got it yet. I nag a lot so I know it was written last thursday and Ive been promised a copy today when I collect DS from school.

I wouldn't have thought there would be a problem then. We had plenty of children doing exams on laptops! But the school won't apply for special provision until he's in year 6. Start negging them about it then!
