Who has had a dyslexia assessment done?

Would you mind telling me what it consisted of? ie either the types of tests it involved, or even the names of tests. How much you had to pay and how long it took. And also how long / detailed the report was that you received?

I am a SENCo and am very aware that dyslexia assessment seems to vary quite alot, but I'm trying to work out the most cost-effective solution for parents / school , but also getting something that is useful for all of us.

We had a Dyslexia Screener done by an Ed Psych. Her report was very detailed. We also went to see a Behavioural Optometrist and got glasses and coloured overlays done. So far so good.

Ed Psych full cognitive assessment via Dysexia Action for dd1 (aged 7;6) cost £500 which has stood us in good stead although we are getting another done locally in Y6 to see how cognitive profile stands just before secondary school. The report is quite technical and probably means more to Ed Psychs than to anyone else. Practical support for learning comes from dd's specialist tutor which is the most important thing (school are rubbish). tbh none of this assessing should stand in the way of good multisensory teaching for children (ie children should not have to wait until their parents can wave a very expensive piece of paper at school before intervention begins, age 7 is late for phonological intervention).

Is a dyslexia screener less detailed than a dyslexia assessment? Did it still give you recommendations on how to help your child. Or just where his / her difficulties lay?

Your LA should have some resources already, maybe you could trial what's available locally? Or your 'cluster'. The educational psychologist also can advise you over which tools are best recognised in the area. No point diagnosing a year 6, and the high school deciding to neglect because 'Spottyshire prefers the Sesame Street Pathway'

A course that's 300 hours altogether is one option. Or rather more straightforward, getting this book will help
