free tax but have a new car how do I renew tax?

Sorry not child based as such but .... Basically hubby wrote off the car at the weekend, we qualified for free tax via dla. He will hopefully be picking up the new car tomorrow which has no tax on it.
can anyone advise on how we go about changing the tax disc for the new car please? Ive looked online and it didnt really make much sense, im having a thick night lol
Can we just take it to post office that supplies tax disc? or does it have to go through dvla?

It is a very long time since I have done this as we have a Motability Car but last time it did it I had to take the exemption form I had been sent with the DLA award letter to the local DVLA office to get the car taxed under the 'disabled' category. Definitely wasn't able to do it at post office.
Hopefully someone who has done this more recently will be along to help soon.

Ahhh, my 'local' dvla office isnt so local to me so im assuming I will have to do it by post then.
