The Sound Learning Centre-best places to stay, things to do, any tips please?

Hi, we are going to the sound learning centre with our DD7 with ASD very soon.

I am just seeking advice and experience from somebody who has been before for the best places to stay, places to eat and things to do...if there is any time to visit anywhere in between therapy. I would be appreciate any advice and any tips. Thank you.

There is a very nice park not very far from the SLC and there is a soft play as well. The SLC is 5 min walk from the town centre so there are plenty of restaurants/supermarkets nearby. not sure about places to stay. try places like holidaylettings.co.uk or homeaway.co.uk, you might find some self catering apartments to stay.

Exactly what Dev said - on the SLC website they used to have a page that had suggestions of things to do and places to stay. There is a Morrisons with a cafe a few minutes walk away - we used to end up there most days!

Thank you dev and Eveie. I have received the link with the suggestions of where to stay but nothing about things to do. We are on a budget so self catering would be perfect for us and will look and the sites suggested. Did you have time to do things in between or is it better to take DD back to where we are staying...would she be tired after the therapy?

We went to the park and cafe most days as we went in summer time and the weather was warm but not so sure we would have spent much time in the park if we went at this time of year. We did try the soft play centre which was fine but I think has different owners now so not sure if it's still the same.

Three hours inbetween treatments sounds like a long time but it did tend to go very quickly by the time we had lunch, a walk around the park and did a bit of shopping. If you have your car with you there is a country park near Cockfosters which sounds good although we never got there but it would have be doable inbetween. If you don't have a car I doubt you would be able to go anywhere worthwhile on public transport within three hours.

DD did not seem tired after the therapy but she was only just turning four at the time so I took the buggy for her .

Thanks again for your reply. We will have our car but don't want to travel anywhere to far but yet again worried that our 10 day therapy is going to be long for 2 DC if we don't do anything. Just trying to get the balance between chilling and the DC not getting bored! Did your DD benefit from the therapy? I am just worried that its very expensive and won't get any positive results but we have to try as my DD can't carry on being scared of noises...I will try anything.

Yes, the therapy was beneficial. If you look for past threads on here, then there are plenty of suggestions as to what to do for free in London.

If you time it right, you can have plenty of free time to do stuff.

I will be happy to share.....but you will have to wait a couple of weeks until we visit the SLC

I am just praying it will be positive news/experience I will be sharing.

Please come back and review - DD has sporadic hearing loss and some sensitivity to sounds (we are not allowed to raise our voices, DH is not allowed to sing) and I vaguely wondered about some kind of AIT...

Well my DD sounds similar in many ways...we are not allowed to sing either and if I raise my voice to DS if he has been naughty she will get so upset as I have hurt her ears! .

I just feel its so unfair for them, it must be horrendous if they're hearing is so sensitive and being affected every second of their day.

I know, she'll happily listen to very loud music, but voices get her really upset, and most singing (I am allowed, but I think that's because I have good pitch and DH doesn't). But she's never bothered outside by loud noises, or crowds and we take her to the theatre a fair bit and she loves musicals. And In the Night Garden Live was crazy loud and she was fine with that.

Sigh.

PS we take her to the theatre because DH is a musician and she likes seeing his shows, not because we insist that Cressida MUST see the RSC once a month at least

mummywhat about silly voices? My DD hates it if we try and copy the way Minnie Mouse, furby, Dr Raj and probably every other character talks.

Sorry, I know this is a very old thread but would love to hear how the AIT went for your child back in 2013 at the Sound Learning Centre. I am considering taking my son over the summer but would first like to hear from others that has actually done it. I am always skeptical when reading reviews on company websites.
