any advice on toilet training child with learning difficulties ?

my dd is 3 and a half and has learning difficulties and has a development delay.Although she is making slow but sure progress im not sure about when is best to do the potty training thing !she talks little but understands well anyone had similer experiences or advice ?

My son is 3yrs and 3 months, with GDD, hypotonia and learning difficulties.

He is making progress very slowly but surely. he can say 2 words, but he understands everything we say to him.

He has problems with walking etc...

With regards to toilet training, i havn't got a clue, as he doesn't let on when he has pooed, let alone peed, so i guess it could be a long way off, but then your dd could be indicating etc...

When i was last with the pead, they said that it could be a long way off.

I would talk to your HV or pead and see what they say.

Also, are you in reciept of the free nappies, if not, get on to your HV.

my dd successfully toilet trained at nursery - if she's 3 will your dd be starting soon? Will she be statemented and get extra help? The situation was different for us because dd is physically disabled only; but it did mean that she did train late (about 4 and a half) and it was the nursery staff who knew what to do about it; I couldn't have done it without them. I would talk to whatever therapists you have and if they say go then go for it, but if not don't worry and don't rush it, if she's not ready it'll only depress you when it fails. I'd take it easy on myself if I was you and let things happen when the time's right.

dd can say pee pee & poo not sure if no`s context ,and she loves wearing nickers although had many accidents but only been nappy free for the odd afternoon not for any length of time.

ALL THE PROFFS say go for it but to be honest im not sure .Also not aware you can get free nappies !

we trained my autistic son when he was4. I was waiting for his speech to come, as I thought it would be easier, but he never started speaking so thought we ought to get on with it. We did the same as Socci and it worked eventually.

Hi elliemae - will watch this with interest as sounds like we are in a similar position. I am very vaguely thinking about potty training but will be led by when her (SN) nursery thinks she is ready (she is also 3.5).

For now, I am just trying to get her to be more aware of when she goes. So if I can smell poo I'll ask her if she has pooed and if she needs her nappy changed. I think she is beginning to make the connection and sometimes signs yes. Obviously a bit harder with wees.

my dd at mainstream nursery 3 mornings a week but they struggle with dd as she chooses to keep herself to herself , she goes to a child development centre group once a week who i am sure would have a better chance as there are fewer children .
Have just been to a friends for a coffee & dd wanted nappie off ! luckly friend didnt mind & luckier still she didn`t have a peepee .

I wouldn't worry too much at the moment. If she has development delay obviously she is going potty trained as late as 3

I would just leave it for now and see if she shows you any of the signs that any child would show

My DD aged 4 and a half (SN) has just got the hang of things these last few weeks, we just waited (knew she would not be potty trained at 2 and a half/3) for her to show us signs that she was ready and took it from there

Her SN School just kept putting her on the toilet every half hour

They have mentioned a while ago for me to just say 'when; regarding potty raining and they will do it at School, but I know she hasn't been ready untill these last few weeks

Maybe have a go in the summer when you may be in the garden more??

I am going through the same thing with my DD (4.5 exactly). Still in pull-ups in the day time (school and daycare choice, not mine), nappies at night. Get nappies free - currently got 675 nappies!!! Asked for pull-ups instead. Bought 4 packs yesterday in Asda (huggies pull-ups, large packets - reduced from £6.75 to £3.75 - cheaper than the smaller packs). Bought 4 - two for home, one for school and one for daycare. Lo and behold, this morning, have received free pull-ups that I requested. Have received 3 boxes, each containing 6 packets, each packet containing 20 pull-ups. Correct me if I am wrong, but I make that to be 360 pull-ups.

Saturday took DD for her swimming lesson - wears swimming nappy - never had an accident but want to be sure. Her dad met me there to take the children to his house for the night and I forgot to take a pull-up to put on. DD asked to go on the toilet in the changing room and did a wee. I couldn't believe it. She will sit on the toilet at nursery and school but NEVER at home and has not done a wee. Saturday she did. Had to go in the car all the way to her dad's house (about 35 minutes drive) and only put a nappy on when she went to bed (about 2 hours later). All day yesterday at her dad's she wore pants (her brother's as her dad had no knickers for her). She wore pants all day, even took herself off to the toilet and did a poo on the toilet. Amazing.

Got the children home last night about 6 and then she created and wanted a pull-up on. I tried not to give in but in the end she was so hysterical I had to.

This morning she is off to school nursery with a pull up on. I have had this large delivery of pull-ups but am thinking I might hide the nappies and pull-ups. She has got some lovely knickers that she chose.

I don't want her getting hysterical and making a big issue out of it but if she can last all day Sunday in knickers (with no accidents) I think she can do it most days.
