My brother is scizophrenic and is going to apply for a mobility car. Trouble is he doesnt take his medicine and so you have a quite literally madman driving round thinking the police are after him etc etc etc.
He is as tightfisted with money as you could be and we are hoping that he has to stump up an amount in advance to put him off applying.
He has also said if he has to pay insurance and tax they can stick it...well lol...im sure you can imagine.
How does the scheme work?
If he doesnt have to cough up anything im going to have to tell the dvla or dsa or whoever it is that hes driving about having not taken his pills etc and id rather it was taken out of my hands.
Thanks.

Finished now, no he doesnt take his pills and the last time he was driving was when he nicked a taxi and parked it outside our house saying it was a police car really and he was working undercover, and then he slashed the tyresd and the police had turned against him...ooeerrr.
Hmmmmmm, hence me not really wanting him on the road.

I would really get in touch with the DVLA, he might cause an accident with his mind like that

sparklymieow · 12/03/2006 17:42

I'm off to dish up my dinner now, chat later

Charliecat,

What is worrying as well is if he has not told the DVLA then his insurance may not be valid. Thus if he does cause or was involved in an accident he will get in all sorts of trouble. As it stands he could very well be seen as driving illegally as he has taken no action to get the DVLA's agreement to drive. Refusing to take meds is another barrier to getting them to agree to him driving.

You need to talk with his mental health social worker as a matter of urgency but they may not be able to tell you much if anything at all (worth a try though). If no joy with them get your GP involved.

On a wider note now do you as a family get any support at all re your brother's schizophrenia?.

How do you all cope?.

buzylizy · 12/03/2006 19:27

just a quick note. If he doesn't tell them his insurance will not be valid. if he is involved in an accident he could end up paying out a fortune. This happened to someone I know.

charliecat · 12/03/2006 20:18

I realised about the insurance bit further down. Thanks. Will do something, going to just see how it goes for now, he might lose interest, needed to get ammo before doing anything.
Meercat, he is now is supported housing after a few years of being on the street/in a forest in a tent/in and out the nick/mental hospitals. (My mum went to social services as he was sleeping in a forest and had frostbite on his face)
This means...er, that they have filled in his forms for him for DLA, previously he was signing on NFA at the jobcentre and it was a nightmare. They got the docs signiture etc for his diagnosis, they have TRYED to get him to go on courses and things he wont go, they have tryed to get him into volunterring work he wont go.
Theres a woman who visits my mum if she needs someone to rant at, but at the end of the day it always ends with, well theres not much we can do unless hes a danger to himself or others.
Do you have any experience with this god awful illness?

I still think he will not get mobility, he MAY get low rate mobility , which you can't get a car with anyway.

charliecat · 12/03/2006 21:52

Sounds good SM just what we want really. :)
