Had our ed psych meeting today

Hiya, just thought I'd update here

I dropped DS off at school this morning and his teacher mentioned the ed psych was coming in and was I going to speak with her and of course I said yes (always wondered what type of parents don't but I guess there are those!). I asked if she was going to be there and she really wanted to but was unsure if she could be released from her class.

The EP was going in to class to assess him before our meeting at 11.30.

So we got to school at 11.20 and she was ready to see us and told us her findings although was a bit of information overload so will know more when we receive the written report.
Basically they said he doesn't retain information that he hears (auditory?) but is fantastic at visual. His concentration is around 5 mins but better in smaller groups. Can recall a set of numbers -4 max. His has absolutely no interest in literacy.

She says he definitely had many "traits" of ASD and possibly ADHD and to try again for a gp's referral to a paediatrician which we will when we get the report so that will hopefully get my doctor to do it this time!

Chances are he won't be statemented just yet because there is already lots in place for him and there is so much they want to try so I suppose it depends how he gets in with those and if he exhausts all those and makes no further progress so I'm happy to try those before going down the statement route.

They also mentioned sensory issues with touch and noise where he dislikes clothes but likes having his blanket with him and also the dislike of too many different sounds.

I've never really thought about dla for him but it was mentioned so we could use it to buy things to help him at home, even if it's just for a laminator to make visual signs at home or shoes because he trashes clarks ones in a month but don't know if we'd get it as we've only started out.

Hi Jackjack. I'm glad things seem to be progressing for you. The EP can't DX ASD etc, as you know so you do need to go back to your GP. It can take months to get an appt with a developmental paed so don't delay. Your (reluctant?) GP should refer if you tell him that the EP has recommended it even before you get the report.

Do you think your DS is getting enough support at school? EPs work for the LA and seem to tell everyone that they won't get a statement. I would take what has been said with a pinch of salt. If your DS needs more support than the school can provide within their budget, he needs a statement. You can apply for one yourself, there are standard letters on IPSEA website.

There is a Cerebra guide for applying for DLA also. Smile
