Autistic Children born by Csection - any link?

Hi all, Haven't posted in a while as lots going on, my son (5) is autistic and has speech & language difficulties, today someone mentioned that as he was born 41+6 by section that was to play a big part in the autism, I have read about the 'myth' almost, regarding the section issue but I'd not heard of the after-term one. I was wondering, for those that have children with extra needs, were they born before/after-term, were they by section?
Thanks

Dd 2 weeks early, ventouse delivery, 6lb 5oz, NT but geeky to borrow your very apt phrase!

Ds day after due date (supposedly, don't see how they can be THAT accurate!), straightforward short birth with no probs, didn't even have gas and air, although he did take a while to 'pink up' afterwards. 6lb 13oz, severe ASD (non-verbal) and SLD.

Oh yes, both my ASD kids had APGARs of 9, NT kid was lower.

thisisyesterday · 14/06/2012 22:15

my HFA and NT children both had apgars of 9
my suspected ASD child has NO apgar because no-one was there to record it Hmm

they were 9lb 1 (hfa), 9lb 5 (NT) and 9lb 11 (sus ASD)
I was 24, 27 and 28 respectively when I had them

Had three sections, only one dc has autism, coincidentally he is also the only one I bf as well.

I read somewhere that there was a link between ASD and cutting the cord the moment they are born. Ds2s cord stump fell off to earl as well. Was guilt wridden for weeks with that one.

DD1 was 4 weeks prem, natural birth 2 hrs 40 mins 7lb 11oz epidural, nearly lost her 2 months before. She has no dx and is technically NT but suffers huge anxiety issues, self esteem issues.

DS/DD I misscarried and never got to know.

DD2 2 weeks overdue natural birth tween home and hospital no pain relief easy birth over couple hours 7lb 14 and NT.

DS AS/ADHD and co morbids was 6 weeks prem, misscarriage was thought at 14 weeks but not so thank goodness. emcs as wedged breach and waters broke, had 2 true knots in cord and weighed in 6lb 13oz.

On his recent dx report it says that the possible identified risk factors are, prem birth, breech presentation, cesarean section plus a family history of OCD/Social difficulties on mothers side.

It says "possible" not fact so I dont dwell on it as you could drive yourself crazy trying to work it all out.

I was also an "old mum"

DD1 40 + 8 days, 7lb 15.5oz, emergency c-section, back to back, labour non-progressive from 5cm. Aspergers/ASD + ADHD diagnosis aged 8.

DD2, born on due date, 9lb, emergency c-section (planned V-BAC), NT, but I suspect dyslexia.

DS1 37 weeks CS transverse breech, had to have bit of help to breathe. Very quiet

DS2 39 weeks CS, came out screaming! :) both Boys on ASD spectrum, DS2 more difficulties.

Twowillbefine · 15/06/2012 20:51

Everyone's an individual!

DS1 34 weeks but straightforward vaginal birth - ASD

DS2 37 weeks fast home birth - too early to be absolutely sure but looking more NT (although no words yet at 22 months)

Dd1 was born 2 weeks early not by c-sec, and dd2 was born on her due dates (by my dates) and not by c-sec. Both have ASD.

Theres alot of theories around. I heard autism was linked to lack of oxygen during pregnancy or whilst in labour etc
My eldest is just going through the assesment process and she was born 10 days over due by emergency section. Her heart rate was erratic for hours (in labour for 14 hours) an then they took a sample of her blood by scratching her scalp and tested her oxygen levels which came back very low. She then wasnt breathing at birth for a short time.
My youngest was born 3 days early by elective section an so far theres no signs of anything to worry about and shes 17 months

DS was born 13 days late, normal delivery, 9lb 13.5 oz. was diagnosed ASD at 3.

marchduck · 19/06/2012 20:27

Both mine 10 days overdue and induced, both vbs
DS 8.4 pounds, forceps (NT)
DD 10.6 pounds, shoulder dystocia , very traumatic birth - (not NT)

My son (AS) was born by section at 42+5, but had great Apgar Score and was a healthy baby (DD was born by section at 37 wks and is NT, btw) Sounds dubious to me. Most first babies are 'late', whatever that means, really. I can accept that my DS was genuinely late, but 7 days or 10 days 'overdue' often doesnt really mean anything.
