It was quite a good item, they got Humphrey Hawksley to do it who has a "special needs child" according to Kirsty, oh dear not PC! It exposed the real cost of properly supporting a disabled child in m/s, esp if they have high care/medical needs. LEAs are often not totally honest, or aware, of the real costs of their places imo, whether m/s or SN. A friend who works in our local Unit for ASD told me that her manager says that a place there costs £13,000pa which is rubbish. They're not including any overheads or setting up costs (which I believe they don't have to) and this unit cost £750,000 to set up for 12 children, but they're also not keeping up with the real cost of how many 1:1s etc they end up having to provide. At a recent tribunal the real cost of a place at this unit came out as £47,500! The Manager and other local professionals genuinely believe these figures that they are told, but how on earth could you provide much at all for £13,000pa??????
The item also didn't include any children with Learning Disability which I think is the hardest to include in m/s so they missed something there.
