DS 1 not crawling or walking? When should I be worried?

Hi All,

I have a DD who is 5 and has ADHD, ASD traits and Dyspraxia. She was slow with ALL her milestones and rarely smiled and was headbanging etc at an early age.

DS has just turned 1 he is hitting all milestones with the exception of crawling and walking. He is a big chunky baby and is the 99th percentile for weight height etc. He is very different from DD when she was a baby she rarely smiled, laughed or babbled and had no interest in toys. DS is a happy smiley playful baby and points at everything and is forming words etc etc.

So should I be worried about walking/ crawling or is it because he is a bit on the chunky side??? Should I asked for a referral or wait???

Advice appreciated.

You don't need to be worried about not walking at 1.

But I would be a bit concerned about him not crawling at 1.

I would suspect that 'he will eventually walk in his own time' - but also that this may be in earlier indicator of the developmental problems (specifically dyspraxia) that DD has.

I would def keep a note of all his milestones and when he's meeting them.

:(

However - just 'crawling late' is not a cause for concern. It's that plus other things which would worry me.

What age was he when he sat unaided? And what age was he when he rolled?

Some babies don't crawl - they shuffle along on their bottoms instead. Do know of a few who missed the crawling stage out altogether and went straight for walking!
If he is hitting all his other milestones there is probably no need to worry at the moment.

Is he rolling? Sitting? Holding things unaided?

I second crazymum - my dd did the bottom shuffling thing. And my nephew walked at 14mths, nothing wrong with him.

Thanks everyone.

He is doing the bum shuffle and is trying his best to get moving but his wee legs are the size of tree trunks so is having difficulty getting going. He is sitting unaided and can get from lying down to sitting on his own. I will keep watching him like a hawk incase he starts to follow in DD's footsteps.

Bum shuffling is a type of crawling :)

I wouldn't worry about him not walking, none of my 3 walked till they where 16 months+. Lots of babies bum shuffle rather than crawl.
