We had to get rid of our Peugeot 205 because the Major would only just fit on the floor behind the front seats and not in the boot at all. It was ok while dcs were really small but I thought it was a bit dangerous once their legs grew in case there was an accident and their feet were trapped, plus of course we could never have any passengers!
Now we've got a Renault Laguna, the boot is plenty big enough for the buggy to fit across just inside and still have loads of room for shopping/camping equipment etc.
We did try a roofbox for a while, which might suit you if you don't want to change your car. The buggy did fit in it easily enough but I'm short so had a problem reaching high enough to close it. We also found it a problem in multistorey car parks as sometimes the ceilings were too low.

We have a Citroen Picasso. Plenty of room to fit both major buggy and a second pushchair for DS3 if needed.
