later diagnosis of cerebral palsy?

my dd is a bottom shuffler (as i was) at 15 months and a doc has vaguely mentioned possible cerebral palsy which i cannot really believe. has anyone else had a late diagnosis of cp based on this sort of thing? dd seems perfectly fine in all other respects.

bottom shuffling is common at 15 months. Ignore the doc if you have no other concerns.

lou33 · 06/01/2006 11:48

15m isnt a late dx of cp really, ds2 wasnt dx'd until he was about 16m old

It's the first time i have heard of bottom shuffling being used to indicate cp on it's own, and quite frankly i think it's ridiculous (unless there are other signs)

Ds1 was a bottom shuffler, but it is ds2 who has the cp. Ds2 just found it easier to get about that way, it's pretty common.

Unless there are other indications which are leaving cause for concern i wouldn't worry.

neice bottom shuffled until she walked at 17months. she doesnt have CP. if you have concerns then ask for more a more in depth assessment, and go from there.

at the doc.

thank you for messages - lou33, out of interest and if you do not mind me asking, what contributed to your ds2's diagnosis at 16 months?

He wasn't doing anything. Couldn't sit, roll, crawl, he just used to lie in whatever position he was put in looking about, albeit quite contentedly . I suspected cp from about 7m old, but kept being told it wasn't. One day i had enough and called the paed , saying tell me what is wrong with him, and if it wasnt cp to tell me what it was. So she told me over the phone that he did have cp.

sparklymieow · 06/01/2006 13:14

Ds was dxd with CP at 2 1/2 yrs old!!! and dd1 was 13 months old.

mommie · 06/01/2006 13:41

lou33 - that sounds so crass I can hardly believe it. what were they thinking of? poor you. tbh, i had no idea until recently that cp wasn't always diagnosed at birth - such is my ignorance.

sparklymieow - that sounds terribly late to me (who knows nothing). were you surprised it took that long?

I suppose CP doesn't always show itself until a child maybe should be up and running round

a parent may raise concern but will be told, wait until he/she is 2 and will will take a look again etc

but then again, I don't know much either!! lol

They did think Ellie had it at one point as she was weaker down the left hand side but they decided she didn't.

my dd was officially diagnosed aged 2yrs 4 months but that was after a long battle to see a consultant.....i originally discussed it with a paed when dd was 16 months......amazing the difference an 'official' diagnosis made, the relevant services suddenly became interested although when it was just me requesting things ie:physio, statements no one was interested........did i make them jump through loops after-too right i did and much of it was down to the information and support that i gained from other mumsnetters like lou33, jimjams, eidsvold, and others who (sorry)names don't just spring to mind....
keep asking questions...

sparklymieow · 06/01/2006 13:49

I knew from 7 months old that 'something' wasn't right with DS, he wasn't sitting, crawl on his front without moving his legs, and when he walked at 18 months we had to postion his left leg, as he couldn't. But the hospital wouldn't listen and keep fobbingme off. GOS told me he had CP when we were referred to them because the local hopsital couldn't tell us what was wrong, within a hour of seeing the specialist at GOS they told us it was CP.

chatee · 06/01/2006 13:51

goodness me how did i forget you sparkly?...sorry

sparklymieow · 06/01/2006 13:51

LOL

jenk1 · 06/01/2006 13:52

My dd was dx,d on Weds this week and she is 21months old, i suspected something from about 6 months but was told not to worry, she bottom shuffled but dragged her left leg behind her, she didnt sit up until she was 1 and still falls over every now and then, shes not walking or weight bearing and will stand up leaning on something, i suggested CP to the consultant a couple of months ago and he said no but this week he said it was CP in her left hand side but only after having done extensive tests, physio assesment and the week she spent in hospital having xrays and various other things.

HTH

sparklymieow · 06/01/2006 13:53

Jenk I asked DS's consultant if he had CP 6 months before he was dxd too.

jenk1 · 06/01/2006 14:07

They seem to not like dxing CP dont they Sparkly?

sparklymieow · 06/01/2006 16:11

no they don't... they were very fast to dxd dd1 (imo) within a month of the HV questioning her delvopement she was dxd.
