I think this is my first ever happy thread - DS (ASD) opened his b'day presents!

Thats it really!
Last year (4) no interest, hated birthdays, refused to look at presents, hated 'happy birthday' song, refused to have candles

This year opened his presents AND played with them
Tried to blow out candles
Let us sing happy birthday
Had a tea party with two children from school
Stuffed his face with cake
And learnt within one day the answer to the question 'how old are you'

And I didn't cry! Usually I feel so sad as I can't help but compare him to his brothers and what they were doing at same age.

All down to a year of fulltime ABA. If the LA f*ers don't take it away by then I can't wait to see what he will be able to do after another year. Perhaps we'll even be able to have a conversation by 6.

Just wanted to share Grin

Agnes, well done to your ds, but he never was 5 yesterday!?

DS was 5 yesterday. Similar to you. 'GETS' birthdays now (although we were lucky as his sister had a birthday in September and then his dad had a birthday about a week before his so we got some practise in).

Blowing out candles took ages but he did it. Had two batches of presents. First was a bit not quite getting the hang but the tea-time batch was met with excitement and appropriate responses.

Like you I had a nice day. He joined in happy birthday and liked his presents (well the ones that I had chosen anyhow - lol).

Hope you have more days like it and many more birthdays of happiness.

Thats brilliant! DS2 (9) will open one present now but no more - and even that is a bit grudging, as if he's doing it because we want him to Grin. Likes small birthday parties and candles, though the exploding sparkler one this year was a step too far. I think he gets the idea of birthdays - ie they involve cake and eating - but not what they represent. Same with Christmas. Brilliant that your DS is doing this so young!
