MIL rang to wish us a happy new year and asked if we were going out to lunch anywhere!!!

WTF???? I can;t work out if she really doesn't get it, or just forgets to engage brain before speaking.

Let DS1 pinch her... Silly mare.

She seems to be always asking stuff like that IIRC! Didn't she one time say something like, 'Oh, then he's getting better?'

My vote is for 'doesn't get it'. No, more like, 'doesn't WANT to get it.'

I'm trying to be charitable and assuming dozy. But then she spoke to ds2 on the phone (who I always think sounds v grown up on the phone) and moaned that she didn't understand half of it and he "talks too quickly when he's excited" Well considering he was diagnosed with a speech disorder 18 months ago I think he's done pretty well!

Any chance of randomly dropping all three of them at her house and dashing out the door shouting, 'We're off to lunch! Back in an hour! Or two. Or three . . .'

i think she pretends to get it but really does not want to get it as that would mean changing her behaviour etc...

can I share - my mother who witnessing dd1 losing the plot ( had this happen a few times this week as dd1 just gets soo overwhelmed she does not know what to do so just freaks and grabs or hits - usually me)

mother says 'just give her a little smack on her hand' she will then know not to do it again!!!!

same mother said she would babysit dd1 and dd2 so dh and I could go to the movies ( we would be gone 2 1/2 hrs at the most) as long as dd1 does not wreck/smash the house up. Dd1 has broken one little plate which is on a tbale of knick knacks that grandma insists stays out so the dds/nieces etc learn not to touch them..... GRRRRRRRRRRRRR according to my mother dd1 haws smashed lots of stuff and when I challenged her to remember beyond the plate she could not tell me anything but more a - youknow that thing!!! so I called her back and said not to worry as we were taking the dds bowling and out to tea. Know which one dd1 preferred - little monkey got a strike her first go - using the rampy thing....

oops sorry long hijack...

I think she just doesn't think in a - if I pretend to be dozy - then I can get away with more - if I understand it then I have to do something about it iyswim.....
