Can anyone help me with social stories?

I'm trying to write my first social story.

The issue I want to adress is when it is ok to be tactile with people.

I.e. Kisses and cuddles are ok at home but constantly cuddling her friend at school (and I mean constantly) is not ok.

But I'm having trouble with sticking only to positives

Here's where I'm at

it's nice to spend time with friends

You can play games together and take turns

But I can't word my directive! I keep coming back to phrases like "personal space" and appropriate contact... Dd has a reading age of 6 for comprehension so I've got to simpler the concept and the language.

Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hi, am new to posting on mumsnet. Have been lurking for ages. Just wanted to say that my DS 6 (ASD)has a similar issue and hugs EVERYONE, even kids he does not know very well. Have tried to explain when this is appropiate etc, but without success. Hadn't thought of using a social story so watching with interest.

I would say something like

Most people enjoy cuddles and kisses but some times some people dont like it.
Some people only like cuddles at home or with people they like very much.
Sometimes its nicer to play games together and mayne talk to our friends than to cuddle them because they maybe arent feeling like a cuddle at the same time as you.
Here are some nice things to do instead of cuddles:
Say "your my friend"
play a game
touch someones arm
give someone a nice smile
ect

When Im at school I will try and do these things instead of cuddles as when im at school I need to save all my engry for learning but after school I will give someone a cuddle that has been nice to me.

You may want to add something about a rule about asking before giving cuddles as this helps make it as black and white as possible for them :)
HTH

friends like to have room round them, it makes playing easier? lol

tabulahrasa · 02/03/2011 23:21

ah crossposted, lisa's is much better, rofl

EllenJane1 · 02/03/2011 23:48

How about setting a reasonable limit? Eg

At school I like to play with my friends.

They like to play with me.

I like to cuddle my friends.

I shall cuddle my friend eg Lucy? once a day.

That is enough at school.

I was taught to do them in the first person and to make them very simple. HTH

Just wondered how your social story was progressing and if you have had any success with it.

Probably too late but only came across thread, I would also add an "it will be ok" somewhere at the end, or middle and end! Ds's social stories from school always have something like that which is reassuring.

lolaismyfavouriteandmybest · 07/03/2011 00:04

Thanks for all replies. Not had time to think about it since I posted! Dd has been unwell.

I like the " friends need room to play" comment :)

Was also taught to put them in the first person.

Ellenjane. That is the kind of thing I was going for! I may steal some bits.

I'm trying to draft it tomorrow as I have a meeting with the school on Tuesday and would like their input (well I can dream....)

I've stolen a lot from Ellen Jane :)

this is the draft I'm going to run past my teacher friends and maybe show school tomorrow

At school I like to play with my friends.

They like to play with me.

I like to cuddle my friends and touch their hair

My friends need space to play and to concentrate on their work

I shall try to cuddle my friend Sally just once a day.

That is enough at school.

It?s nice to play with my friends and it?s nice to concentrate on our work

Whaddaya think? should I split the play and concentrate messages up? I'm trying to keep it short.....

Lola, I am reading up on social story stuff, I think you are almost there with this but maybe a couple of tweeks. I have to get ds2 from the bus stop but will be back straight after.

HelensMelons · 07/03/2011 15:52

I am in Mrs ?'s class

In my class I have lots of friends

I like to play with the boys and girls in Mrs ?'s class

They like to play with me

I like to cuddle my friends and touch their hair

Sometimes my friends need room to work and play

So I will try to cuddle my friend Sally just once a day

That is enough in school

Mrs ?/mummy is happy when we all have a nice day at school.

It's a tricky one that may need to be broken up into morning and afternoon for your ds, a whole day might seem like an awful long time. Hope that helps a little bit - along with everyone elses!

EllenJane1 · 07/03/2011 18:02

I like yours Lola. You should have only 1 directive and it should be kept really simple at the level of comprehension of your DD. I like Helen's suggestion that mummy ( or teacher/ friends) is happy. Good luck with it.

lolaismyfavouriteandmybest · 08/03/2011 16:00

OK I've gone with

At school I like to play with my friends.

They like to play with me.

I like to cuddle my friends and touch their hair

My friends need space to play and to concentrate on their work

I shall try to hug my friend Sally just once a day.

That is enough at school.

Mrs teacher is happy when we all play together and concentrate on our work

It?s nice to have cuddles and kisses with my family

Well I showed it to her teacher and got a polite thank you but no comments. I've asked for her feedback when she's had time to think about it (I'm not holding my breath tho)

thanks for all your help
