Hi all
has anyone got any good tips for something to put on the end of a pencil that DS (5 with ASD) can safely chew.At school he is continually chewing pencils to bits.

Chew stixx pencil topper you might get on ebay or amazon try googling. Never used them as my ds cant use pencil however has tried chewy tubes. (still chews anything n everything else too)

how about the vile tasting stuff from the chemist you put on yr fingernails to stop from biting them? i guess that might work

oddgirl · 16/02/2011 19:27

Thanks both-his LSA actually suggested that nail stuff but I am sure DS taste sensation is very poor so not sure it would work-may give it a bash.
Thanks Shazian-they look fab.

The chewing is a sensory feedback thing that he needs to do. better to find a way for him to do it without eating the pencil than to try and make him averse to it which could lead to distress coming out some other way.

Good point ohmeohmy-I have ordered some pencil top things.
Thanks ladies-was geeting worried about lead poisoning!

a little OTT IMHO i suggested the liquid for fingernails to try and put DS off as the wood splinters could be dangerous but i disagree with the pencil tops as ive used them and they can easily be injested too my son does the same inc chewing his clothes and yes if hes not chewing hes picking holes in material instead but rather less dangeruous i thought.

don't worry i'ts carbon not lead!
