Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Does anywhere sell cloths or something similar with different textures for sensory stimulation?

Hi, my 6 year old daughter loves to scratch her fingernail against her thumb with a piece of material in between. She used to have a very well loved teddy that she's worn so many wholes in. We can't find him now and she's started doing it on her clothes. I've tried telling her not to and she gets upset saying "I need to."

I'm wondering wether I can buy something that she could use insted? I've given her a flannel but she'll leave it in different rooms and still use her clothes, so I'm thinking something she could wear?

I suppose I could try to make something but I'm not at all creative. I thought I could use different textures like flannel, ribbon, shamy leather etc. If you have any ideas please let me know, or better still if you know where I can buy something like it.

Thanks. Smile

I like the idia of a fabric book tied together with ribbon. She actually prefers materials with a bit of resistance like flannel. She's likes her polo shirt too I've noticed as it has bald patch already.

The ribbons also sound nice and would'nt look too strange either. I like the idea of saying she collects them. Wink If we could find some in different textures that would be great.

What about a taggy blanket with different textured ribbon and fabric? Dd1 used to rub her labbel on her pillow Smile. I have made a lot of taggy blankets for sn children.

Have you checked if Fledglings have anything? I think they are www.fledglings.org.uk

She did have one of those taggie blankets but wasn't really interested in it as it was probubly too soft.
I could make one with different textures. I think the bundle of ribbons would look more age appropriate for use in public though. Wink

My DS is always fiddling with fabrics. He has a basket which I have filled with scraps of fabric (just remnants - nothing bought). His faves are chiffon and lace. The other thing he loves are those foil happy birthday banners, he will play for hours with those.
He had a bad for xmas with lots of sqaures of material in (leather, flexible mirrors, wooly etc.). I think it was from SpecialNeedsToys.com, but he prefers his home made ones.
