Hiya would be very interesting to know,if you can apply for a loft conversion through the disabled adaption scheme grant type thingy lol, that the council runs? I have a 3bed house rented from the local authority.I have 3 children and a partner, would be nice for my autistic son to have his own room with sensory stuff and room to stim or relax,a nice room tailored to his needs basically, but not sure whether they cover that? Any ideas mums?

I think your best course of action would be to contact your local council, also get your social worker involved and anyone else that you can think of to help you. Try asking CAB. I went to them with a question on the council tax...the local council had given me the wrong answer. So have to contact council now to see if I can get a rebate...

Ok thanks I don't have a social worker but think I may ask for one soon! Would be amazing if you
Could!

Yes you can. You need to contact ss and get an OT assessment. You might not need the grant part as LA have to provide suitable housing so may do without grant. They may however just divide acroombin twobif possible.
Either way you will need OT referral so give them a ring. Hth

No it has to be ss OT, we have normal OT that dd2 see via paed but also had to have OT from ss come and assess

Kesha321 · 21/01/2011 19:29

If your son has no mobility difficulties and it is 'simply' a room of his own that is required, then the council should suggest rehousing to a bigger house with more bedrooms. The OT can assist with letters of support if needed. The Disabled Facilities Grant should be used for 'access to basic facilities' ie a stairlift to access the upstairs bedrooms or a floor draining shower to be able to maintain hygiene independently. The DFG is not used for issues of overcrowding or to children to have space for themselves. The coucil may give permission for you to convert the loft on a private basis ieyou paying for it yourselves. Hope this helps, good luck!

Yes just explain you need OT assessment for house changes. However you might want to check your LA website to see if it is needed as your a LA house.

I wish I could afford a loft conversion,I dought that we would ever be re-housed the housing situation in Birmingham is ridiculous, and the stress of moving house is far too much with a autistic child my son attempted to run away at 4am to our old house when we 1st moved here,it took us 4 months to settle him,so wouldn't want to go through that again.

But I suppose its all worth a try,I read in asd support forum that a few people are going through assessments for a loft conversion and on-suite bathrooms for the lo's with autism, but I guess each county has a different rule and with the budget we would be lucky to get a apple!!

kesha - have a ds with asd and completely understand where you are coming from. you will need ot from ss - they will have a helpdesk number you can ring and they will assess from there. remember under the law asd is a disability and his need for own space is connected to his disability not just a desire to have his own room
