How the other half live! I'm just pleased I managed to get me and DS dressed today!!! Grin

Hey Sprinkle.....I didn't say I was Miss World!! Probably, I DO look a bit like Dick Emery myself but, I think I look Ok!!! My beloved DH probably doesn't have the heart to tell me.

It doesn't take that long....My face paint job's probably the longest thing and I do it whilst eating my toast and watching Spongebob in the mornings with my ds.

My mum, bless her, told me years ago that I needed to wear a longer skirt as "your knees have had it".

Nice.

Taysh1109 · 21/01/2011 20:45

I try to apply make up so that I don't look like a zombie, but with DD routing through my make up bag and eating my lipstick I normally give up half way through!

Spinkle, DD is exactly the same. I can now only shower when she is asleep, otherwise there's hell to pay.

The only thing I can do with DD around is blow-dry my hair, as she absolutely loves the hairdryer!!

So picture me... (un-ironed) old clothes, very comfortable shoes (they have holes in, I like them, deal with it), half a face of make up... and perfectly styled hair!!

I look a bit like a tramp that a kind-hearted hairdresser has taken pity on!

tallwivglasses · 21/01/2011 21:38

'A badly-made bed'? I rock the unmade bed look (and my lady garden is more of a lady forest these days)

Kesha321 · 21/01/2011 21:39

Oh the days of when I looked after
Myself, nice strait hair, which has now become a afro!! Used to have all these fancy shoes and now it's hmm hope the grip is good on these £4 plimsoles I might be able to catch my ds now! Used to have fancy tight tops, now it's aww this will cover the flab =] then it was aww might go Ann summers and get some sexiii underwear now I'm typing in google "cheap industrial sized bra with braces that will take em off my knees?" and oh this sock will do it only has 3 holes...but then I look at my children in all there fancy Zara,h&m and next wear looking smart, sharp and clean and think Awww I still got it in me somewhere!!

Taysh1109 · 21/01/2011 21:44

Haha Kesha... I'm so with you. Even though I look like hell, my DD looks fabulous everyday! Well done us! :)

Spinkle · 22/01/2011 08:35

Oh yes. DS wears decent and nice ironed gear. I am determined he will not be judged badly on his appearance.

Obviously my appearance is in total contrast to his. I wonder when we are out and he's doing his 'help help!' thing people think I have kidnapped him...

nameymacnamechanger · 22/01/2011 16:36

DS lets me have a bath but stands at the side talking about something I'm sick of hearing about fascinating, occasionally pouring a jug of water over my head (his revenge) or insisting on shaving my legs. Oh and the dog lies on the bath mat.

DS is terrified of showers and hairdriers so those are out. I wash hair in bath early evening, brush it, slap body lotion on, PJs on, go to bed, then straighten it in the morning (don't wash hair every night).

Don't wear much make up at all but like my clothes to look nice and nice painted toe nails.

DS is one of those kids you can get out of the bath, put in freshly laundered and ironed clothes and he instantly looks like a grubby little urchin. I am the mother embarassingly rubbing dirt off her child's face on the bus in shame! Hmm Grin

nameymacnamechanger · 22/01/2011 16:40

Have had to laugh at some of the posts on this thread Smile has cheered me up no end.

I have always bought scaffolding type bras (gravity is not my friend) and flat shoes (clumsy alert) anyway. I'm far from uber glamourous, just desperately holding onto that last shred of dignity. Grin

vjg13 · 22/01/2011 18:30

I love the style and beauty threads. I find shopping for clothes, make up, beauty products etc a really good distraction. My daughter is having her 10th operation this week so will use it as a good excuse to treat myself.

pagwatch · 22/01/2011 18:39

I love style and beauty.
I buy vogue.
I like clothes.

When I was very very depressed I wore dhs rugby shirts and looked like shit.
For me getting dressed up and looking nice is about keeping myself together and remembering that fir the rest of my life there is more to me ran just being ds2s carer.

I don't give a shit what people do to keep themselves getting up in the morning. I get tired of being judged and try very hard not to judge others

upsylazy · 22/01/2011 20:10

I love bears! Bear

auntevil · 22/01/2011 20:18

I recognise myself in so many of these. Kesha - LOL and Spinkle - i know what you mean about kidnap theory - except mine are the spitting image me so i probably wouldn't get arrested.
I think that we all go through different stages in life. Fashion used to be a huge part of my life (studied it and first job were in fashion design!) - but other peoples lives 'took over'.
Every so often i treat myself, but i can't justify the money on so many things that would hardly ever be worn. I don't go out enough.
It is my job to make sure that my 3 DS grow up to understand that you brush those teeth, you wipe bogeys away (not on sleeves unless it is someone elses Grin ), you do not wear socks with sandals, only Simon Cowell and granddad wear their trouser waist by their chins, tattoos are not just for christmas and that blue, black and beige are not the only colours you can wear.
If i have time after that, sometimes i try harder, sometimes i don't. It's just no longer the big part of my life that it was. je ne regret rien!

waitingforgodot · 22/01/2011 20:19

I love style and beauty-its my escapism.

c0rn5i1k123 · 24/01/2011 01:15

I like s&b - love looking at all the links. I don't get to the shops to buy clothes, so do all my clothes shopping online. It's very handy to have all those ideas, just like window shopping really.

donkeyderby · 24/01/2011 05:21

What a shame Raven666 feels she can't post on here and she's only just joined. I do hope she comes back. The whole thread was lighthearted and not 'horrid', but some people are in a very difficult place with their children and just don't have the mental or physical energy or time to dress up, or even care about fashion. Having a giggle about what seems so trivial to some is ok. Live and let live

Herecomestheninkynonk · 24/01/2011 08:06

Well I didn't manage to dry my hair before bed last night.

So today even after a quick bash with the GHD's, I've got about as far as looking like Justin Lee-Collins (fortunately without the beard)!

Good luck to all those looking to groom and doll up today. May your children allow you the time to don nice clothes without vomiting, drawing or snotting all over them and may they not eat your war paint!

Can I still join S&B although I don't own a hairbrush, hair dryer, hair wax/gel or curlers?

Actually scatch that, I do own some wax but my eyes are so puffy from lack of sleep I have no idea how to find it. It'll be about 7 yrs out of date in any case.

I did buy some facial stress relief once. Didn't work on me face, so I drank it.

intothewest · 24/01/2011 08:37

Wow- finally got drawn in-I had a look at some of the thread titles on S & B and had to get out before I spent the day there !!

I don't wear make up(I rub my eyes and look like a panda)My DD (nt) is really into fashion and hair and make up- It really is nature v nurture- She does like to straighten my hair sometimes(comes out looking a bit like a wig)

but hey ,she looks great,ds always looks pretty cool

Yeah my fashionable look is also the unmade bed (usually clean, unless ds has dribbled on me )Grin

WHAThisFlappinNotFlyin · 24/01/2011 08:45

Looool @ unpaidcarer!!! Got any left???

wendihouse22 · 24/01/2011 09:28

It's important to have a bit of perspective, I think. Hope Raven 666 returns......we're all in the same boat really, aren't we?

I have to say that though I like to put my face on each day, there's loads of stuff I don't bother with. I have good strong nails that have never been painted because I lop 'em off and keep them sensibly short. I don't possess a hair dryer and have had my long thick hair cut short because frankly, it looks ok and I DON'T NEED TO DO ANYTHING WITH IT. My feel are a whole other story. They're knarled from years of ballet boarding school and clawing my way to an Equity card. They are really atrocious and deformed and best covered up, if possible.

I'm 49 this year and frankly, I NEED THAT FACE STUFF! I look like I've been dug up without it and really quite unwell. I'm doing a public service each day I slap on that Max Factor Age Rewind foundation (one pump only.....less is more in your late 40's) and my Avon blush. Mascara? Whoever invented it ought really to be up for a Nobel prize.

It's not a frivolous waste of 15 mins to me, it's an absolute necessity in order to have the confidence to go out there and get through the day!

wendihouse22 · 24/01/2011 09:29

That would be my FEET that are a whole other story!

c0rn5i1k123 · 24/01/2011 09:42

dittod wendihouse - I need that stuff as well!

unpa1dcar3r · 24/01/2011 11:59

Lol Wendi
I agree, (I'm 46 going on 127). It is with trepidation I dare step outside the sanctity of my own home without at least a bit of tinted moisturiser and mascara (God bless the WOMAN who invented that).
Not least because I tend to scare the natives who will run screaming into the hills and mountains never to be seen again despite massive searches by our local mountain rescue team (I do donate to them regularly out of guilt)
Although it is true I do not own a hairbrush or any other instruments of torture regarding my naturally chinese looking spiky locks (it grows out, not down like normal peoples) finding that splashing some water on and giving it a quick finger rub (there's a rude joke in there somewhere) does the job.
On rare occasions people who have seen me without make up (and not run to the mountains being made of sterner stuff) all say 'aw you look soooo tired/ill/poorly...dead" :(
