Continence service has refused to see ds

And told the HV, who referred him back in september, to support in the community HV snowed under so didn't support and never even told me about the refusal, until I called her today. Ds is 4.6, has short-limbed dwarfism which makes things physically difficult for him, but also has autistic traits including extremely resistant to change and language delay. I feel really left alone and don't know what to do

Can you challenge the decision - it sounds like you have a rubbish HV can you ask for a new one

Do you know why C.S have refused to help?I agree that you should chase up the H.V and find out exactly what has been said

HV said she would find out, not sure if she really will though

Get a referral from your Community Paed - or the most active paed you have access to. Ring them, or their secretary, and leave a detailed message, ie the refusal details, etc.

Paeds have been by saviour many times over access to other services. They seem to have more clout.

you will just have to 'remind' her- C.S have always been helpful,then again I talk to them directly as ds doesn't have a H.V (though one was around initially to get the nappy prescription started)

So you do all think that he is a candidate for the continence service?

Continence service here doesn't start till 7. 4.6 does sound a little young, I think, for needing what is a last resort (and snowed under, here, anyway) service. Not being unsympathetic - can see why you'd want it - but you certainly would be turned down here.

The HV should at least be offering some advice and I would keep pushing for this. My son wasn't dry at night till he was 6 and it did feel like nobody had any advice; I think it just clicked in the end because nothing seemed to actually make any difference!

We go the nappies from 3 or 4 (she's 8 now, excuse the woolly memory). Dd2 has severe learning difficulties and is not mobile - I don't know if that makes a difference to the age?

Just had a look at continence services online and most seem to say from age 4. Doesn't say for my local one though.

where I am it starts at 4, dd3 (4.9) has seen them a couple of times and receives nappies, not that the lady we saw was much use but that's a whole different thread . I'd second getting the referral done again by a paed if you can. If you can find a phone number for the service I'd also ring and ask them directly just in case they do have a higher age than most. Have you an OT that can advise/provide any equipment that may be useful?

I thought it was 3 here - but ds is 12 so it may have changed or be my failing memory! I'm pretty sure it was 3 because I had to find a HV (the one at our surgery left just after ds was born and they had a stream of Locums) and by 4 he was at school and then it is the school nurses who refer.

Agree with justa. Find out from horses mouth why the refusal cld juist be hv did not give enough info

Is your DS in a school setting where the school nurse can refer as well?
I know that in my area, they are really tightening up new referrals. They are making all sorts of 'have you been seen by x', 'have they been referred to y' type questions. My DS2's school nurse is still trying to get him on 'a list'.
