Where are you getting social skills training??

Please excuse my ignorance as I am pretty new here and I apologise if this topic has been discussed a million times.

I have heard people mention social skills training and I wonder if anyone has found any anywhere??

DD(AS)struggles in mainstream secondary school but is ok with basic social phrases etc (e.g. Thank you for coming) when she is reminded at home. I suppose we do a lot with DD at home in this area but when I see "social skills training" mentioned on the net I wonder what everyone else is doing?

Are there any good books anyone can recommend?

we did social stories with DD1 when she was younger, theres a good book by carol gray.

As for training I know there was a course running in Herts for the spectrumgirls group but we couldnt make it :( they had someone private come in and do it fora number of weeks.

SALT do groups here - don't know how widespread that is though

Never had SALT tabulah as no issues in that area. (Plenty of other issues though)

sorry spectrumgirls is a social group for girls with ASD in Herts and surrounding areas. Also a support group for parents :)

SALT don't just do speech, social skills are part of communication so they fall under SALT as well - it might be worth finding out if you can get a referral for that reason

schools sometimes do social skills groups as well

they used to have more, but that's the only one I can see - but of course you need people to play it with, lol

we have a social communication team of SALTs (they work within CAMHs I think) who organise groups & training for parents. Not sure how good it is because ds is too young - a few of us ABA parents locally are trying to organise group for younger children (yet to materialise).

Through SALT and ASD outreach, half-termly training is given to the TA who works 1:1 and in a small group with my son. It's in his Statement so no getting out of it!
