If your DC goes to a MS school, did they start full time straight away?

Ed Psych agrees with me that DS should only do half days to start with when he starts in September, but the school are making some noises about it saying that they dont agree with half day starts.

Has anyone any experience either way? DS only goes to preschool in the morning and I think new school + more children + long day will be too much for him to start with.

We started with nursery only 2 pm's a week, then moved to 3, then 4, but not to 5 until after 2 years. We did work at home in the other sessions, with ABA tutors. Ed Psych opinion surely trumps school?

Ds started part time even though the school weren't particularly happy. Area senco insisted that full time would be too much.

It took until jan to get him in full time and was definately best for ds.

DS went for the first week on mornings only.
Then he went mornings and lunchs for 2 weeks.
Then he went full time.

If you and the EP says half days are best to begin with, the school should listen. Stick to your guns. x

DS1 started part-time, and he was 5 in the September so usually full-time straight away. His school's policy was that he would have to be full-time so they were initially resistant, but the Specialist teacher said they could use his statement hours as "planning" for when he wasn't there so they then jumped at the chance.

I ended up pushing for him to start full-time sooner than intended but it is a long story to do with gates(!) so i shall spare you my reasoning. I collected him before lunch for the first 1 or 2 weeks, then he stayed for lunch for the following 2/3 weeks then full time.

everyone at dd3s school does half days for the first 4 weeks. Dd3 has just this week started full days, we've added half an hour a week to see how she copes with it.

my ds is still on part time schools choice not mine. he was only doing 1 1/2 hours this has recently been increased to 2.

DS2 should have started in September, but we kept him in nursery until January and the school did several obs visits during that time, then he started afternoons for a term before finally going full-time. He's in year 1 now and we are trying to move him to a special school.

Dd2 did part time for a term, starting with two afternoon and building up gradually until she was doing about three days overall. We then decided she was ready and went to full time. In our case the school was fine with these arrangements, it was the LA who were less keen. If you have the ed psych on side there is probably very little the school can do.

It's so annoying when professionals are inflexible about things that are so obviously in the child's best interest.
