I work as a TA and thee is a little boy in my Y1 class that has SM.

He didn't speak at school at all last year. He is actually starting to warm up to me a lot. He began by whispering in my ar and will now talk to me, although only in one or two word sentences only, when we are on our our. He spoke to me in front of the class teacher yesterday and in front of two class mates today, although very quietly. He has also whispered to 3 or 4 other staff this term too, someting he hasn't one before. We are obviously making fab progress and his mum is really fab, staying at the start of the day to do some 1:1 stuff with me gradually being introduced in. There is a speach therapist involved too and we are due to seeher again very soon.

But I feel I need to read up more as I have very little experience of this and need to know more, and of the various stages the little boy will go through.

Can anyone direct me to some reading materials I can buy or download that would be beneficial?

Thanks.

no personal experience, but a quick google has brought up this site, which looks useful:-

www.selectivemutism.co.uk/

might be worth looking for jessica kingsley publishing or winslow publications websites, as they cover a wide range of SN.

Website mentioned has the best info anywhere in the World on SM.
Also if your funds will go this far theres "The Selective Mutism Resource Manual" by Maggie Johnson and Alison Wintgens - best prices I have seen are on Amazon.
If you are anywhere near Leicester contact Lindsay Whittington as Maggie Johnson is doing a one day course there soon at a reduced cost in respect of 2011 being the National Year of Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
Meanwhile sounds like you are doing a great job!! Well done!
